imm sound technology allows for a faithful reproduction of 3D soundscapes by the placement of extra loudspeakers, including in the theaters’s ceiling, that completely surround the audience. But it is not only about locating sound sources in all positions in the theater. It is also about recreating beautiful reverberations, ambient sounds... total immersion is the goal.
imm sound is also fully compatible, and 3D soundtracks can also be enjoyed in 2D systems like 7.1 or 5.1, just like stereoscopic movies can also be played in theatres that are not equipped for 3D. Although when you hear a 3D soundtrack in its full glory and then, after, you hear it through a standard 5.1 system, you get the feeling the 5.1 system is outdated...
To play immersive 3D sound in theaters, the room needs to be equipped with 3D loudspeaker layouts and amplifiers with sufficient output channels. imm sound has a network of certified theater equipment installers. Installation companies may also be certified to install imm sound equipment.

Producing a movie with imm 3D sound is a wonderful creative process. The novel aesthetical possibilities are so powerful that it would be fair to talk about the birth of a new narrative language. As in stereoscopy, every new production explores different aspects of this language, in a process that might only settle in a few years time.

The IAW™ (Immersive Audio Workstation)
The Immersive Audio Workstation or IAW™, is imm sound’s post-production tool for film mixing in immersive 3D sound. It seamlessly communicates with ProTools™, and is responsible for all immersive 3D sound related processing. The IAW™ is the power behind our channel-free technology, that means a sound engineer is not limited by having to make decisions like “send this stereo track to the topfront- left and top-back-left channels. Equipped with an intuitive tactile interface, it allows the placement and motion of sounds around the audience with the touch of a finger. It allows the easy, intuitive modification of sound properties, like size or proximity. The IAW™ is also capable of mixing and manipulating immersive 3D sound recordings from the shooting stage.
