Info

After completing a degree (2:1) in Illustration, and doing work-experience at Connect in Liverpool (where I learnt to code HTML), I spent 3 years at Amaze as a web designer. After leaving Amaze I went travelling and did a wide range of jobs, none involving computers. On returning to England, I started freelancing in Brighton and London, doing design and animation work. Since then I’ve developed my skillset to include video editing, motion graphics, live video-mixing, AS2, AS3, and 3D.

I’m now based in Manchester, and my work tends to fall into two categories – interactive and animation (and often a mix of the two). With animation and motion graphic jobs, I’m sometimes given a storyboard and assets, or just an idea, and other times I’m asked to make it up as I go along. I mainly use After Effects and/or Flash, using the timeline, physics and dynamics simulators, particle systems, and any other interesting methods I come across – whatever is needed to solve the brief. I either do the sound design myself (using Apple Logic and various synths), or work with dedicated agencies.

I’ve moved away from development work, as I’m now focussing on the design side of things, so any designs for HTML are passed onto developers (like this recent site design for Tesco Kitchens). I still do Flash-work, like this recent job for Sony, or this takeover for Vimto, and the odd banner here and there (here‘s a mix of banners I’ve made over the years), but I tend to avoid larger Flash development jobs these days.

On video editing jobs I’m usually given a stack of footage and asked to edit it into shape, to fit a soundtrack. I mainly use Premiere, along with After Effects, but can also use Final Cut Pro.

Other jobs are harder to categorize. Whilst developing Talksport’s weekly Flash-based magazine, I wrote and made some short comedy films for them (Capellovision), and nearly got a TV series out of it (Channel Zero). I’ve also VJed and played audio-visual gigs in parties, clubs, and a festival, using projectors, hardware video mixers, and software like VDMX.

I’m always looking for new creative challenges - at the moment I’m especially interested in 3D, and have been getting to grips with Cinema 4D. I’ve also recently got into photography and filming (on a DSLR) and would like to explore this area more, mixing it up with 3D objects (see this experiment).

I’m available for freelance work (on-site or remote). Give me a shout if you’d like to work with me, or just to say hello. I’d love to hear from you..

Cheers

Tony.
