Free CDN

Looking for a similar plugin but for commercial CDNs like Akamai, Limelight, EdgeCast, Amazon and so on? CDN Rewrites to the rescue!

For busy websites, using a CDN (Content Delivery Network) to transfer static content such as images, javascripts, stylesheets, Flash etc. is highly recommended (as listed in Yahoo!’s Best Practices for Speeding Up Your Web Site) as it reduces server load and bandwidth thus improves stability and availability.

There is a catch – Commerical CDN’s like Akamai and Limelight are not cheap at all. Good news, we have an exception however – the free, P2P-based CoralCDN allows us to take full advantage of a powereful CDN without spending a dime. How to use it? Well, basically, just append `.nyud.net` to the hostname of any URL, and that URL will be handled by Coral – simple.

This plugin takes that simplicity one step further (or closer?) by rewriting your static files’ URL’s (JavaScripts, CSS, images etc.) so that they are served from Coral servers instead of your own. You don’t have to touch anything! Just enable it, and boom! your static contents are handled with care by Coral’s powerful server clusters.

If you are paying bandwidth fee, this plugin hopefully helps with your bills. Even if you don’t, enabling it may save your site in peak times.

Installation

1. Download the plugin
2. Extract into a folder
3. Upload the entire to `wp-content/plugins/` directory of your WordPress installation
4. Enable it via Plugins panel
5. It should now work out of the box. If you want to tweak it a bit, head to Settings->Free CDN

  Am getting this error message when I load my site…”Content Encoding Error
  The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because it uses an invalid or unsupported form of compression.
   
  Please contact the website owners to inform them of this problem.”
  Any idea what I should be doing. My site does not load. Is there a conflict with another plugin.

  i have a problem with your plugin, i debug mode it says ” script will be written into www.mysite.com.nyud.net/script ——————————————” and i think this is the cause that breaks my adsense,heyos,analytics code…how can i resolve?thanks

  It breaks my site if I use it with AWSOM PixGallery.  Excluding the folders that the Gallery images are housed in doesn’t help.  Unfortunately, I can’t give up AWSOM because I’m an artist and I need the gallery feature.  Any ideas?

  This plugin is perfect, it can save you lots and lots of bandwidth however its very slow. Without FreeCDN my site was loading for 6-7 seconds, and when i enabled FreeCDN it was loading for 20+ seconds, at least 3 times slower.
  But keep in mind ITS FREE, so dont ask for too much, just rate their plugin with 5 stars, cuz it does its job perfectly, without changing anything on you wordpress configuration.

  i tested the plugin and besides a slower load of the index page i can t get the plugin to exclude this file static.dilandau.eu/media/swf/embed_player.swf wich i use to play various songs

  So this plugin now seems to be broken with the latest update to WordPress 3.1.  It breaks the “media upload” buttons in that the lightboxes will not load.  It also breaks the ability to “pre-schedule” posting as the button to edit that parameter also breaks with this plugin active.  Lastly, the ability to add tags to your post is dramatically slowed down with the latest update and CDN Rewrites active.  Once I deactivated this plugin everything returned to normal.  It appears to be some sort of jQuery conflict.  Any plans to update this plugin sometime soon?

  I activated Free CDN on WordPress 3.3 multi-site, but it didn’t seem to do anything other than add admin panels & a the footer credit. Turning on debug mode didn’t do anything either. I added an echo in the pre_content() function, and the echo never appeared, so it looks as though the Free CDN class functions for processing the buffer aren’t firing.

  Well, maybe. I don’t know. I hope that points you in the right direction, though! This would be an excellent plugin for multisite to help offload some server processing, so long as it works flawlessly with multisite & the domain mapping plugin as well.
