Interesting Regional Nicknames

Michiana, Michiana what? That's a question that many people find themselves asking when traveling through northern Indiana. Michiana is a nickname given to the area in northern Indiana that borders southern Michigan. Once you travel into southeastern Indiana, where the state borders Kentucky, you'll find yourself smack dab in the middle of Kentuckiana. These nicknames are so popular that they are used in advertising, and it isn't surprising to see a billboard for "Michiana's largest used car store," or a newspaper that covers Kentuckiana. While these regional nicknames sound unusual, there are many more throughout the country.

Consider the student neighborhood on the University of Dayton campus in Dayton, Ohio. The two neighborhoods are affectionately known as The Darkside and The Ghetto. Talking about them with people not from the area can result in some strange looks and surprised faces. In actuality, they got their names because when the school first acquired the land, there were no streetlights. In Ohio you can also find the old coal towns of Congo, Mt. Nebo, and Cheshire just to name a few. Ohio is also home to Springfield, which is sometimes called Spring-tucky by locals.

While on the topic of Ohio, there is very small town in Ohio called Knockemstiff. According to local legend, two men fought in a bar, and one threatened to knock the other man stiff. Somehow the name stuck. And don't forget that people from Ohio are known as Buckeyes.

Atlanta, Georgia has the nickname of The ATL, while North Carolina has The Triangle. The Triangle refers to the neighboring cities of Chapel Hill, Durham, and Raleigh which are located in a triangle shape. There is also the Lowcountry of South Carolina. This refers to the area of the state that lays directly against the Atlantic Ocean. Pee Dee is an area that stretches between Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The name is a shortened version of Piedmont, and is what remains of an old mountain range.

Or consider the unusual town of Fax Valley located in Illinois, and Metroplex, Mexico. Then there's the Arky, or Arkie which refers to Arkansas, and Zonie, which refers to a person native to Arizona. Indiana is home to a lot of Hoosiers. Hoosier is a term for anyone from Indiana, the state is called the Hoosier State, and Indiana University teams are known as the Hoosiers. Not willing to take a backseat to another state, Wisconsin has the cheeseheads. Cheeseheads are the nickname given to anyone from the state, or who move to the state.
