2012 has started very strong for John and the John Whelan Band. The Andy Cooney Cruise of Irish Starts was a wonderful and successful trip. So much so that John has agreed to do it again next year. Check john’s tour dates for more information and links to the website. Make sure you let John and the people doing the booking know that you are going specifically to see john as this lets us know what kind of support we are getting. As usual there are many performances already booked for this year and we will continue to keep you informed as to what John is doing. We are excited that the John Whelan Band is going to be doing the 25th anniversary of the Dublin Irish Festival in Ohio this August 3,4 and 5. John will also be doing the O’Flaherty Irish Music Retreat for the first time and will be teaching and doing workshops and performances along with many other wonderful musicians.

One of the most exciting things to happen over the last several months is John’s association with The Center For Irish Cultural Studies. Now a consultant,  he has worked with Dr Gerald Reid who is the Director of the program to initiate a series of three lectures starting with the legendary Derek Warfield who was an origional founder and member of the Wolftones who did a very successful  lecture on Rebel Songs and why We Sing Them. Coming up on March 6th we have Dr Mick Moloney doing a lecture on The History of the Banjo in Irish Music, which is sure to be a sellout so call now to reserve your seat. Next month will be Jerry O’Sullivan doing a lecture on The Origins and Music of the Irish Union/Uilleann Pipes. This is not to be missed!!
