Crohnote: Another one bites the dust???

Kevin Sheen (left), senior director of development for EverPower Wind
Holdings Inc., told members of the Cattaraugus County Industrial
Development Agency on Tuesday a lawsuit and the expiration of
incentives have slowed the Allegany wind farm project.

April 25, 2012
ELLICOTTVILLE — EverPower Windholdings Inc. is unlikely to begin construction his year on its 29-turbine wind farm in the town of Allegany, a company official told the Cattaraugus County Industrial Development Agency on Tuesday. Kevin Sheen, senior director of development for EverPower, said the 2011 Cattaraugus County Concerned Citizens lawsuit and the group’s notice that it would appeal the lawsuit’s dismissal delayed the project past the Dec. 31, 2011, deadline to qualify for about $31 million in federal subsidies. “The lawsuit knocked us off of our path,” Mr. Sheen told the IDA board members. “We’re not a company that takes development risks during a lawsuit.”

Wind Credit Stalls Despite Support

"Elizabeth Salerno, AWEA’s data guru, says no plans exist for new wind projects in 2013."

April 24, 2012
Congress is taking the wind out of turbine sales. And that's despite support from President Barack Obama, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and a substantial roster of House Republicans who see extending the wind tax credit as an electoral imperative.  Rep. Dave Reichert (R-Wash.) is so frustrated he's thought about trying to go over House Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp's head to get legislation moving. The credit doesn't expire until the end of this year, but turbine makers are already feeling pain because developers can't afford to lay bets that Congress will sort it out later.

The bottom line: It takes a long time to get projects up and running, and, amid tight budgets, subsidy scandals and election-year politics, there’s no guarantee that this tax break will catch a tailwind in time to avoid a crippling interruption in production. Congress is taking the wind out of turbine sales. And that's despite support from President Barack Obama, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and a substantial roster of House Republicans who see extending the wind tax credit as an electoral imperative.

Crohnote: The "infamous" Bill Moore (aka: the original Maple Ridge promoter) is interviewed by an Albany radio news program about his current promotion of off-shore wind in the downstate Long Island area and his views on wind in the north country.

April 24, 2012

State Energy Project Raises NYRI Fears

April 22, 2012
Though it’s been a few years, the memories of the battle against the NYRI power line still are fresh.
And as representatives from utility companies, the energy industry and the banks that fund them convene to discuss the future of the state’s power grid, local officials and residents who fought NYRI say they are hopeful their plans won’t hurt local communities. “We will continue to keep an eye on it,” said state Sen. Joseph Griffo, R-Rome. “While NYRI types can exist again, I don’t see a revival of NYRI, and the governor’s people are aware of the concerns of communities.”

Who Can Stop the Wind? These Residents are Trying

Kevin Elwood, centre, with neighbours Michael Dickinson, left,
and Chuck Magwood hope to stop wind turbines with building
like this within the 550 metre buffer zone.
ANDREW FRANCIS WALLACE/TORONTO STAR

STAYNER—The little hut not far from the end of Kevin Elwood’s airstrip looks more like a hobbit house than anything: almost a play house, a mere 16 by 20 feet. But since it comes complete with electricity, running water and a septic system it qualifies as a dwelling. And it’s part of a game of tic-tac-toe between a wind developer and a group of local residents who want nothing to do with wind turbines. The residents have been sprinkling mini-houses like Elwood’s in the path of proposed turbines – knowing that provincial rules forbid turbines from being erected within 550 metres of a dwelling.

The Folly of E15 Anti-Hydrocarbon Policies:EPA’s E-15 Ethanol Plan is Bad for Our Pocketbooks, Environment and Energy Policy

spacer Written by Paul Driessen, Master Resource, www.masterresource.org | spacer | spacer | spacer

April 24, 2012

The Obama Administration’s anti-hydrocarbon ideology and “renewable” energy mythology continues to subsidize crony capitalists and the politicians they help keep in office – on the backs of American taxpayers, ratepayers and motorists. The latest chapter in the sorry ethanol saga is a perfect example. Bowing to pressure from ADM, Cargill, Growth Energy and other Big Ethanol lobbyists, Lisa Jackson’s Environmental Protection Agency has decided to allow ethanol manufacturers to register as suppliers of E15 gasoline. E15 contains 15% ethanol, rather than currently mandated 10% blends.

House Panel to Open Inquiry into Expiring Tax Extenders

spacer Written by Nick Juliano, E&E reporter, www.governorswindenergycoalition.org | spacer | spacer | spacer

April 23, 2012
With the clock ticking on a bevy of coveted energy tax provisions that are set to disappear at the end of this year, a key House subcommittee later this week will launch its inquiry into how or whether to throw a lifeline to industries that rely on the favorable tax treatment. Energy tax provisions, such as the production tax credit (PTC) for wind that expires at the end of this year, as well as expired programs such as the 1603 grant fund, will be among those considered at a wide-ranging hearing Thursday morning before the House Ways and Means Committee’s subpanel on select revenue measures.
