Over the last 30 years or more, the civil rights movement in India has emerged as an autonomous voice in defense of civil liberties and democratic rights of our people. The Peoples Union for Democratic Rights, Delhi, is one such organisation. It came into existence in 1976-77 as the Delhi unit of a larger national forum, and became PUDR on 1 February, 1981.

Reportedly more than 168 MoUs/MoAs have been signed by the Arunachal Pradesh government alone.

PUDR Releases CDRO Report: The Terror of Law: UAPA and the Myth of National Security

 The Terror of Law is a CDRO (Coordination of Democratic Rights Organization) report which shows how and why the UAPA curbs the freedoms provided by Article 19 [Protection of Freedoms] for expression, assembly and association against one section of political opinion. Like its predecessors TADA & POTA did, UAPA virtually disenfranchises a section of the people. The report points out that freedom of expression is not an individual right but a collective right of groups, unions and political parties to disseminate their views and mobilize people.

PUDR Condemns Arrest of Professor Ambikesh Mahapatra of Jadavpur University

 PUDR is astounded by the West Bengal government’s latest incident of intolerance of dissent and suppression of democratic rights. Media sources state that a professor of Chemistry at Jadavpur University, Ambikesh Mahapatra, was assaulted by TMC hoodlums at his residence and then arrested on 12th April for allegedly circulating, by email, a political cartoon lampooning the chief minister, Ms. Mamata Banerjee for the rail budget fiasco.  A 17 member team of civil liberties and democratic rights organisations from Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Manipur, UP, Uttarakhand, Maharashtra, Jharkhand visited 3 districts Latehar, Garhwa and Palamau from March 25th to 29th 2012 to investigate some recent cases of violations as well as do a follow up of some of the cases from the past. Jharkhand has been in news for both peoples’ struggle against water, forest and land grab, and operation green hunt.

A STORY OF ‘SUICIDE’ AND SURVIVAL: Death in the custody of Vijay Vihar Police Station

The newspapers on the 3rd of November 2010 reported a death in the premises of Vijay Vihar P.S. of a 25 year old youth named Vikas. These reports suggested that Vikas had an affair with a woman married to another man. On that specific day Vikas called up police assistance at 100 after he entered into a fight with the husband of the women he reportedly loved. Thereafter Vikas committed suicide inside the police station where he was kept. PUDR‟s team investigated this death.

PEOPLE’S CONVENTION FOR THE RELEASE OF THE PEOPLE’S ARTIST JITAN MARANDI

It was a long-awaited gathering. About five months had passed since the conviction of Jitan Marandi and three others, all poor peasants from adivasi, dalit and downtrodden socio-economic backgrounds by the District and Sessions Court at Giridih, Jharkhand. Jitan himself had been incarcerated for about 3 years and 8 months, accused in various cases, including the one filed in the wake of the Chilkhari firing of October 26, 2007 in the Giridih district. This is the report on the Public Convention against the death penalty to Jiten Marandi and others held in Ranchi on 12th November 2011
