Clock Opera
Ways to Forget
7.4
Island, 2012

spacer It seems like every other day some guy or girl sits down at a synthesizer, expresses some feelings, and makes a record (when did getting a band become the last item on the checklist?...).  London's Guy Connelly has more than just that as Clock Opera, even if still in that basic vein on debut Ways to Forget.

For such a melancholy title, Ways is actually a pretty uplifting record, from keys emotion of opener "Once and For All" to a brighter world to finish on closer "Fall Better".  Of course, maybe the best track is the darkest one, "Lesson No.7", a pressing piece in which one feels the ‘tronic war is coming.  It is followed by the building cry to revolt "11th Hour", but after that it is the light that shines, such as on the burning brighter ‘tronica of "Man Made" and "White Noise" - even the wistful "Move to the Mountains" goes into uplift, a musical sentiment style reminiscent of Arcade Fire (QRO live review - even if Connelly isn't as orchestrally capable).

Ways to Forget could use more shadow - "A Piece of String" feels too emotional as it doesn't have as remarkable ‘tronics as other pieces on the record, and the following "The Lost Buoys" is more synth-anthem-ish.  But it's definitely a bright time for songwriters and their keyboards.

spacer It's easy to see how the proliferation of nation-crossing nostalgia revues could have drawn Jeff Mangum back onto the stage, if only (as always) in marked contrast to his peers.
