Beauty Q&A With Rebecca Romijn

You can read about FITNESS cover girl and Wella Professionals celebrity ambassador Rebecca Romijn‘s workout and diet secrets in our March issue— but we got her to reveal how she gets those beach waves and that fresh, glowing skin, plus the products she can’t live without.

FITNESS: What’s the one beauty product that never leaves your bag?
Rebecca Romijn: I always carry Wella Ocean Spritz to refresh my hair. It mimics sea water and adds great texture. It’s a very good low-maintenance solution for someone who’s on the go.

FITNESS: What are your haircare, makeup and skincare routines like on a typical day?
RR: I cleanse and moisturize my face in the morning and at night, and never forget sunscreen.

FITNESS: What are your secrets for looking great no matter where you are and what you’re doing? Do you have a go-to makeup look or hairstyle?
RR: I don’t wash my hair every day; in fact I always prefer “second day hair”. It’s easy and it does what I want it to do!

FITNESS: What are you gym bag beauty essentials?
RR: I always carry a hair elastic and bobby pins in my gym bag to put my postworkout hair into a bun. A bun is an easy classic. I also put on a great pair of sunglasses and Smashbox O-Gloss for my lips. The pink shade is natural-looking and perfect on everyone. And I love the texture.

FITNESS: What’s your biggest beauty indulgence?
RR: My biggest beauty indulgence are regular facials, and I splurge on Oyxgen Plasma by Knutek. It’s a miracle-worker, and I use it morning and night when I cleanse. Oxygen helps with fine lines and to heal blemishes.

FITNESS: What’s the best tip you’ve picked up from the makeup, hair and skincare experts you’ve worked with?
RR: The best tip I’ve learned from makeup artists is to regularly use the Clarisonic on my face. Even if I think I’ve removed all my makeup, it’s amazing how much cleaner my face becomes after I use my Clarisonic. It’s possibly the best investment I’ve made in my skincare routine since I’ve been an adult.

Rebecca Romijn: Losing Baby Weight Was “The Hardest Thing I’ve Ever Done”

After giving birth to twins Dolly and Charlie in December 2008, Rebecca Romijn was determined to get her pre-baby body back. Unfortnately, it turned out to be a much bigger challenge than Romijn anticipated.

“Losing that weight was probably the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life,” Romijn, 39, tells the March issue of Fitness. “Everything I did before I got pregnant — like Pilates, which I had done for about 14 years — didn’t work anymore. I had to change the way I worked out, the way I ate– everything.”

A friend convinced Romijn to try Bikram yoga, which she credits with helping her shed more than 60 pounds.

“At first the idea of doing a 90-minute workout in a 105-degree room sounded like torture,” Romijn admits. “But the sweating is exactly what I became addicted to. My body changed dramatically almost immediately. I’m stronger, I have more energy and I feel better, too. I was proud to get back into a bikini!”

Dieting was another problem for the Sports Illustrated supermodel. The 5-foot-11 star “forgot how much I was supposed to eat to keep my weight in check” while she was both pregnant and nursing.

“I went on a major diet about eight months ago. I cut out starch, dairy, fat, red meat, alcohol and sugar,” Romijn tells Fitness. “Just being on a diet was weird for me. I had never been on one in my life, and suddenly I was counting calories and measuring my food. Cutting out sugar was definitely the hardest. The first week I thought I was going to die. The cravings were bad. But after that, it was easy.”

Romijn’s husband Jerry O’Connell helps her find new ways to stay in shape, too

“We love to take long bike rides. We have a tandem bike, and we go up in the hills near our home,” she says of O’Connell, 37. “Jerry is very show-offy when he’s good at something, and he’s pretty much good at everything. But he’s been doing Bikram yoga for about a year now, and he isn’t very flexible. I’m happy there’s one thing I’m better at than he is.”

Rebecca Romijn on Why Models Should Start Working at 18

So the big model news this Fashion Week, aside from Karlie Kloss not walking any shows, is that the CFDA’s new guidelines require catwalkers to show proof that they’re 16 or older in order to walk the shows. How this will be enforced, we’re still not sure. Ford has already sent out a statement confirming they are repping models under the age of 16. And it’s likely other agencies are too–and sending those girls out on castings.

Well, after the Cynthia Rowley show last night, we spotted former model and now actress Rebecca Romijn and figured we’d get an expert opinion on the matter.

“I think that models should be 18 or older,” the stunner told us emphatically.

Why?

“Because there are child labor laws in this country and having been a model I have witnessed enough to know,” she explained. “I think some models are too young when they start working. And I think that a lot of parents trust that they’ll be in really good hands and sometimes they aren’t.”

We wondered if she ever witnessed anything that gave her, uh, pause, and she decidedly (but vaguely) told us, “Yes. Lots of things. Am I going to go into it now? No.”

Okay then. We also briefly referenced the newly formed Model Alliance, which led to Romijn sharing this interesting insider tidbit:

“By the way, alliances came up when I was modeling, too, and I was always invited to join them,” she said. “I think it’s a great idea and I really hope it works because I think that models need a lot of protection. But you can get blacklisted, too, if you join one, and that was what I was always warned against. So you never know.”

Yikes. So does Romijn think that still happens now? “I don’t know,” she said. “I hope it works. I would love to see it work.”

Well, as the Alliance already has the support of A-listers like Coco Rocha, Doutzen Kroes, Shalom Harlow and Crystal Renn–not to mention the backing of the CFDA and a promising meeting with Vogue–it’s looking like models rights have progressed with the times. Maybe Romjin can be the group’s honorary chair.

Rebecca & Jerry on Marriage, Kids, Keeping Their Love Alive in Hollywood

Rebecca Romijn and Jerry O’Connell have been happily married for four years, have adorable twin daughters Dolly and Charlie and look more in love than ever.

OK! chatted with the blissful couple at Nivea’s Millions of Moments of Touch event at the Empire State Building in NYC on marriage, kids and how they keep their love alive in Hollywood.

Obviously, you and Rebecca have no problem with PDA. But how do you balance out your relationship, kids and a career and still find time for one another?
Jerry: Once a week, we have a date night. But sometimes I don’t really keep up with that promise a lot because we do have two little kids and we can’t always find a sitter. I’m working here in New York, and Rebecca has been in L.A. for a little bit so I fly out on my day off. It’s tough, but we do try to get at least one day a week just the two of us so we don’t go crazy. Otherwise all of our dates would consist of going to see animated movies and eating mac and cheese at family-style restaurants.

Rebecca: When we go out to eat, we sit on the same side of the table.

Jerry: In Hollywood, you can’t go to the more popular establishments because they are always packed.

Rebecca: So we always have to look for less popular restaurants.

Are you thinking about having more kids?
Rebecca: No! No! We are done! Two is enough! We don’t want to be outnumbered.

How was it balancing two at the same time?
Rebecca: That’s all we know. In a lot of ways, we feel like it’s easier and right now they keep each other so busy because they are each other’s play dates. Right now, they are just getting potty trained so diapers are now almost part of our history! No more disgusting diapers, so in a lot of ways it’s getting easier and easier.

Since you did have twins, what are some of your workout tips?
Rebecca: Do yoga. We like to do things together a lot. A lot of bike rides, hiking. We walk around the city a lot, we go to the gym sometimes.
