Written by Jennifer on April 17, 2012 • Leave a message? / 1 Comment

For years, the family of Latino civil rights leader Cesar Chavez turned down producer’s efforts to create a film about his life. Now, the first biopic starring Mexican-American actor Michael Pena, who will play the titular role, and award-winning actresses America Ferrera and Rosario Dawson is underway. The film will be directed by Mexican actor-director Diego Luna.

This past weekend, Dawson — who is set to play labor leader Dolores Huerta in the upcoming Cesar Chavez biopic — addressed a packed conference hall at the University of Southern California during the opening plenary of the Voto Latino Power Summit, an organization dedicated to engaging Latino youth voters and leaders, of which she is a co-founder and chairwoman.

Alongside co-founder Maria Teresa Kumar, the President and CEO of Voto Latino and Huerta, who also participated in the event, Dawson had this to say about playing the civil rights activist in the upcoming film:

“The more I get to know [Huerta], the more I am impressed and a little frightened about making sure that I get it right.”

When Huerta, took to the podium, she told Dawson, “Rosario, I’m glad you’re gonna play me. That’s awesome.”

Rosario Dawson Bringing Graphic Novel ‘O.C.T.’ to A&E
Written by Jennifer on March 28, 2012 • Leave a message? / No Comments

Rosario Dawson is teaming with The Walking Dead’s Gale Anne Hurd to bring her graphic novel to A&E.

The drama project, O.C.T., is being developed with both women attached as executive producers. Though O.C.T. — an acronym for the NYPD’s Occult Crimes Taskforce — is still in its early stages, it is being considered as a star vehicle for the Sin City actress.

The scripted drama, an increasingly appealing genre for the cable network, will explore the inner workings of the task force, which was established after the Civil War to make the New York City streets safe from practitioners of black magic, demons from another dimension and all manner of supernatural malcontents.

Like the graphic novel, co-created by Dawson and David Atchison, O.C.T. will center on the character of Sophia Ortiz, a new member of the bureau who uses magic, spells, ghosts, the undead and the unnatural. At the heart of the story is an ongoing struggle between the O.C.T. detectives and an organized demon-force attempting to take over Manhattan. (At one point, Dimension Films was developing a big-screen version.)

News of the project comes as A&E wraps up its best quarter on record, with the network best known for Hoarders and Storage Wars posting gains in the key adults 25-to-54 demo (now averaging 819,000 viewers) and with total viewers (1.6 million). If ultimately ordered to series, O.C.T. would join a scripted slate that includes The Glades, Breakout Kings and the upcoming Longmire.

The script will be penned by The Unusuals’ Jorge Zamacona, who also will serve as a producer alongside Dawson and Hurd, who is particularly well-versed in the graphic novel to TV business as evidenced by the success of AMC’s Walking Dead. Atchison, Ford Gilmore and Tony Shasteen, the graphic novel’s illustrator, will join them as producers.

Zamacona is repped by CAA and Gang Tyre, and Dawson is repped by CAA, Untitled Entertainment and Bloom Hergott.

The Saturday Interview: Rosario Dawson
Written by Jennifer on March 16, 2012 • Leave a message? / No Comments

Rosario Dawson is not like other Hollywood actors. Consider this: she’s 32, and in her 20s decided she’d had enough of being judged on her looks, so took to wearing enormous sweatshirts to auditions.

“I’d perform my ass off, and the casting directors would be like, ‘You are perfect for this role, but can you wear something a little less shapeless?’” Her manager would bargain with her. She could wear a roll-neck jumper, he said – but could it at least be a fitted one? “I’m like, ‘Ugh, fine’, but these stupid conversations needed to be had, because unfortunately, don’t believe what they tell you, there’s very little imagination in Hollywood.” She hoots with laughter.

It annoyed her when casting directors asked to see her in more revealing clothes, she says, because she was naked in the film Alexander, “so go to any crazy, sick website and you’ll be able to look at it in slow motion if you like”. Does that bother her? “No, not at all, my point being: then don’t complain, ‘We don’t know what she really looks like.’ Are you kidding?! Do your research. ‘She looks a little fat right now’,” she says, recalling a message that filtered down from some rotten, deluded film executive. “Really? They’re called breasts … There was definitely a period for a couple of years where I rebelled against it. It probably cost me a lot of really big jobs, but I was just so angry.”

I had been worried Dawson would be too tired to talk properly. Earlier in the day, she had called to put the interview back two hours, pleading jetlag, her voice full of mid-Atlantic grogginess. But she arrives at the Guardian on foot, poses quickly for a photo, sits down and she’s away, words tumbling out.
