A Blast From The Past In The Present: Retro Fashion, Movies and Vince Giordano

April 26, 2012 Artist News, Orchard News No Comments

spacer What do Boardwalk Empire, the movies The Cotton Club and The Aviator, and now The Orchard all have in common?

Vince Giordano and his passion for early jazz!

More than ever, retro fashion is a huge trend this year: from your movie theatres (The Artist, Hugo) to fashion runways (Ralph Lauren’s Spring 2012 “Great Gatsby” gowns) and TV programs (Boardwalk Empire), it’s undeniable. The Orchard is thrilled to jump on the retro bandwagon in welcoming the classic great Vince Giordano.

Musicians like Vince Giordano have certainly contributed to the return of the aesthetic, glamour and nightlife of the Twenties. Vince has spent 30 years as a bandleader and is now an authority on recreating the sound of the 1920s and ‘30s jazz and popular music. Most recently, Vince Giordano & the Nighthawks won a Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media – 2012 for their work on Boardwalk Empire, Volume 1. Vince and the band are also heard and seen as the musicians behind the USA Network series Royal Pains.

If you want to hear him in action, I highly recommend Vince’s weekly show with the Nighthawks at Sofia’s Restaurant in New York on Monday and Tuesday nights. Or you can check out his upcoming tour dates below:

4/30 New York Plaza Hotel Grand Ballroom
5/06 Morristown, NJ Mayo Performing Art Center
5/16 New York Central Park Boathouse
7/14 Falls Village, CT Music Mountain – Gordon Hall
7/18 Old Westbury, NY Old Westbury Gardens
8/05 Newport, RI Newport Jazz Festival
8/10 Litchfield Jazz Festival at Goshen Fair Grounds

Welcome, Tom!

spacer Introducing Tom Wheeley, Senior Director, Business Development

Hi everybody. Firstly I just want to say how excited I am to be here! I’ve been waiting a while for my move to the US from London, having been living out of a suitcase (not literally of course) for a good year for things to materialize. It’s bloody exciting times!

So a bit about me… and am going to start at Uni otherwise I’ll be here all day. I went to Manchester Met in 2000 only to survive a semester due to a ridiculous amount of partying and consequently very little time in the lecture theater. On return home my change in appearance led my mother to proclaim ‘Thomas, I’m finding it very difficult to look at you right now!’ so I took the rest of the year out, delivered white goods and drove an electric powered fork-lift (just awesome fun) and decided I wanted to work in the Music Industry. I fell in love with it after picking up Oasis ‘Definitely Maybe’ in 1994 and started playing drums in the school band Sympathy (the worst band name ever in the history of band names).

By early 2000 I realized that I probably wasn’t going to make it and that I should go into the business side and be a producer! As you do! I joined a Music Management course and spent 2-3 days a week at Cooking Vinyl in London, making the tea etc. (which is where I met Robert Plant…) I finished Uni and went on a 24 date tour of the UK doing some street marketing for a band, ate lots of gas station food and generally had a great time. Then CV offered me a job before the label launched Uploader, a digital distribution start-up and brought me over as a Label Manager. A year later and IODA acquired Uploader in order to establish an EU presence and I put the Retail Marketing department in place. I then moved into Account Management and Business Development and ultimately found my calling, which was nice!

I am a big football fan (soccer for some of you) and support Manchester United, am rinsing the Horrors record ‘Skying’ and enjoy killing zombies on my iPad.

Revel In A Rare Louis Armstrong Release In Honor of Jazz Appreciation Month

April 25, 2012 Artist News No Comments

spacer

Smithsonian Folkways just dropped a last minute surprise on us for Jazz Appreciation Month. Satchmo At The National Press Club: Red Beans and Rice-Ly Yours by the jazz icon Louis Armstrong is an impromptu performance at the National Press Club in Washington DC, and hit stores yesterday.

In 1971, the inventive cornet and trumpet player turned an award ceremony into an amazing performance, and unfortunately it was one of his last as Louis passed away 5 months later. This performance with longtime bandmates Tyree Glenn and Tommy Gwaltney had Armstrong belting out classics like “Mack The Knife” and “Hello Dolly,” which you can listen to exclusively here. Originally released as a limited vinyl in 1972, this legendary performance has never been available digitally — until now.

The release will be commemorated with a ceremony and concert on Friday, April 27th, at the National Press Club itself. Starting at 1:00 p.m., the event will consist of a press conference featuring officials from Smithsonian Folkways, the National Press Club and the Louis Armstrong Foundation, and a discussion with Q&A with musical experts. A reception will follow with the album played in its entirety. Get the album today, and if you’re in DC, stop by for the ceremony!
