Use Classic menu in Ubuntu 11.04 Unity Launcher
Posted Under: General
In Ubuntu 11.04 Unity, you might prefer the left launcher bar but dislike the searching-style app menu in top-panel. Mac-like dock has classic app menu but there also has many useless shortcut icons that already shown in left launcher bar.
Although we cannot replace the top-panel with the classic gnome-panel, there’s a classic start menu can be added onto left launcher bar. See effect:
Steps:
1.) Open up a terminal window and install cardapio from PPA:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:cardapio-team/unstable sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install cardapio
2.) Create a launcher by:
mkdir ~/.local/share/applications gksudo gedit ~/.local/share/applications/Cardapio.desktop
copy and paste following :
[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Type=Application
Terminal=false
Exec=cardapio
Name=menu
Icon=gnome-main-menu
Then close and save it.
3.) In nautilus file browser, navigate to “.local/share/applications” (Press Ctrl+H to view hidden files) and then drag and drop Cardapio.desktop onto left Launcher.
4.) Adjust the pop-up menu location.
Before this, when you click the icon on Launcher it pops-up the menu in middle area of screen. To adjust the pop-up location, open up CompizConfig-Setting-Manager(run sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager
if not installed) and click into the configuration page of Place Windows.
In Fixed Window Placement tab, click New under Windows with Fixed Positions:
type “name=cardapio” (without quotes) after Positioned windows
check “Keep in work area”
set proper value of x or y positions

Is there a way to make cardapio icon installable from the unity app menu instead of from .local/share/applications?
I noticed if I delete the cardapio icon It shows up in the app menu on the unity launcher but will not allow me to drag and drop from there to the unity launcher.

Thanks for this tip.
But for my desktop 1280×1024 resolution works with
x: -2083 an y:-1326.
Works just fine, success for you guys.

Hello,
this is wonderful. But there is an error in 4.) Adjust the pop-up menu location. : name=cardapio not name=cardopio is right.

This a great solution to a problem that shouldn’t really exist.
But im finding the menu is a little slow to load. It takes a few seconds to loadup.. does anyone know why or can make it faster?

Try pressing the keyboard shortcut:
SUPER + F1
same as:
“windows button” + F1

By the way, while interacting with the mouse it is really mandatory that it takes a while to loadup, otherwise it would be really annoying when you move the mouse close to the left border, cause the panel would pop in and out unexpectedly.

Not SUPER + F1, but:
ALT + F1
same as:
ALT + F1

Pretty useful. But two things really annoying me. (1) Keyboard shortcut (from cardapio) will not work for first time in a session. If we set global shortcut, it takes 2 seconds to display. Adding in startup application makes menu visible instantly on login.
(2) Clicking on menu takes atleast 5 seconds to display
Even with these problems, I am using it because it is a great application.

I noticed that the Cardapio window appears after a short delay the first time the Cardapio icon is clicked in the Unity launcher. Then, in Terminal, I entered ‘Cardapio –help’ and saw that there is a ‘cardapio hidden’ start option that starts Cardapio without opening a window. I used Startup Applications (you may have to install this tool) to add it to my auto-start applications list, and now the Cardapio window opens without a delay the first time I click on it.
Note: Cardapio now appears in the Ubuntu Software Center (or maybe so because I installed the Cadapio PPA?) There are several versions of Cardapio for different desktop environments. It appears that the Ubuntu Unity desktop uses the gnome-panel version of Cardapio, which runs on Python scripts, doesn’t use config files as mentioned in some instructions. Many of the pre-Unity instructions for installing Cardapio do not apply to the Unity desktop.

Tip: You don’t need to set anything in Compiz Config Settings anymore for proper window placement.
Where it says “exec=” in the .desktop file, put “cardapio show-near-mouse” without quotes

It’s sad just when Ubuntu was getting good they pull a bone headed stunt and call it unity.
