spacer The Bandwidth Apocalypse Is Not Coming
Rumors of video capacity crunch greatly exaggerated
Posted 2007-04-05 14:49:51 by Karl
CIO Insight shoots down much of the speculation that the Internet is facing a bandwidth apocalypse because of increased video demand. "The supply of available bandwidth, especially at the core of the net, looks healthier than the pessimists would have it -- or even bother to support with hard numbers when pressed to defend their arguments," says author Edward Cone. The article doesn't mention that those predicting bandwidth apocalypse are usually either looking for hits or trying to scare people into a political position.

spacer Zudeo Renamed 'Vuze'
High definition video system from Azureus
Posted 2007-04-05 12:46:11 by Karl
The folks behind the BitTorrent client Azureus today announced the official launch (relaunch?) of Vuze, which the company dubs the "next evolution of quality broadband entertainment." Vuze used to be code-named "Zudeo," which has been in beta and has been previously discussed here. Azureus has struck a deal with a number of legit distributors to offer video content, both in standard and high definition. spacer spacer spacer story continues..

spacer Bells Using Minority, Disabled Groups For Telecom Propaganda?
Posted 2007-04-05 12:29:23 by Karl
Bruce Kushnick pens a piece for Nieman Watchdog exploring how AT&T and Verizon are manipulating public opinion by "co-opting" (read: paying) legitimate minority, disability, elderly and low-income groups into supporting positions that are frequently not in their members' best interests. This, of course, is in addition to their use of consumer groups they've made up completely, or think tanks they've paid to produce public relations disguised as objective economic analysis. spacer spacer spacer story continues..

spacer RIAA Fights NIN Marketing Campaign
Even though the band and its label signed off on it...
Posted 2007-04-05 10:58:51 by Karl
The marketing campaign behind the new Nine Inch Nails album Year Zero has been interesting to watch for its creative use of viral participation. While the campaign has used fake government websites, fake revolutionaries, fake crackpots and fake companies to tell the concept album's backstory, the band has also leaked DRM-free tracks to fans (some of them in formats allowing for remixing by sequencing software). spacer spacer spacer story continues..

spacer Time Warner LA Class Action
Customers lose patience with service...
Posted 2007-04-05 09:42:23 by Karl
As previously mentioned, Time Warner Cable service in Los Angeles has been absolutely awful (see our forums) since they integrated recently acquired Adelphia systems in the region. The deal increased their subscriber count from 350,000 to 1.9 million. spacer spacer spacer story continues..

spacer The Six Month FiOS Install
The fun of life on the bleeding edge
Posted 2007-04-05 09:21:32 by Karl
Yes, there's going to be headaches with early deployment of next-generation broadband technology. Yes, Verizon FiOS generally gets positive reviews from our users. That said, installations probably shouldn't take six months.

spacer PC Magazine Discovers Comcast Caps
'Comcast and I are not on speaking terms...'
Posted 2007-04-05 09:16:17 by Karl
PC Magazine is the latest mainstream technology magazine to discover Comcast's invisible download caps, which we've been discussing here for the better part of a decade (last month it was the Boston Globe who awoke to the issue). The report repeats commonly voiced concerns that Comcast customers who download too much face disconnection, but aren't told what the limit is and often have difficulty getting consistent answers from the company. spacer spacer spacer story continues..

spacer The Vonage 'Workaround Deal' That Wasn't
Deal with VoIP Inc unrelated to Verizon patent loss
Posted 2007-04-05 09:04:26 by Karl
Earlier this week Ars Technica reported that SEC filings indicated that Vonage had found a workaround for their patent worries by signing a new agreement. A Vonage rep tells GigaOM that the report was in error. spacer spacer spacer story continues..
