Touted as a “holiday for the 99 percent,” May Day is an extension of the Occupy Wall Street movement. Surviving the Subway

The right to shoes

I grew up in the suburbs of San Francisco, riding BART into the city. I was 11 when I first made the trip alone, and my mother dropped me at the station with one anxious piece of advice: “If anyone crazy bothers you, outcrazy the crazy. They’re more afraid of you than you are of them!”

I never was bothered on BART, but my mom’s advice was so strange-and sounded like so much fun-that it stuck. I guess it lodged itself somewhere deep in whatever part of the brain is in charge of primal, intuitive reactions, because when I finally needed it, 8 years later, at the Canal Street subway station, my crazy defense mechanism sprang fast and worked well. Taste of Tribeca: A Preview

I arrived at Sarabeth’s absolutely ravenous (and sweaty, and short of breath from power-walking two miles through West Village and Soho. Let’s just say that my previously implicit faith in Google Maps has been irrevocably shattered) and prepared to gorge myself on the best that Tribeca has to offer in a preview of the Taste of Tribeca‘s charity culinary festival, featuring top downtown restaurants. Despite being forty minutes late, there was still plenty to taste. I’ll give you a run-down on my favorites, though every course—and there were ten, plus an occasional surprise course—was absolutely delicious, so that you’ll know where to cash in your tastes if, no, when, you go.

Polpette (Meatballs in Tomato Sauce) from Pane Panelle: This was probably my favorite savory dish. The carnivore in me literally started slavering with glee the moment I heard “all beef” and “meatball.” Doused in tomato sauce, sprinkled with parmesan, slightly spicy so that the meaty taste didn’t overwhelm, I could’ve eaten five of these suckers.  Read the complete post »

Zen Palate: Healthy Asian Fusion Done Right

A vegetarian feast at Zen Palate

Ever since asian-fusion restaurant Zen Palate opened its third location in my Upper West Side neighborhood, I have become a devout costumer. The fare is equally delicious as it is health-conscious, a rare combo. And the atmosphere is laid-back, clean and modern inside, with the addition of two outdoor spaces, weather permitting. Did I mention they have a full bar? Always a plus when convincing a wary friend to tag along – after their meal, they’ll be hooked! A meat-loving friend of mine couldn’t believe how savory the dishes were. She’s now a regular costumer too.

Still not convinced? The Zen Palate restaurants have won numerous awards including Awards of Distinction by Zagat Survey and AOL CityGuide‘s #1 Best Vegetarian Restaurant and #1 Best Healthy Dining Restaurant in NY. It has also been listed in Food Networks’ top 5 Best of Far-East Favorites in the U.S.
