William W. Brooke

Managing Partner 

William W. Brooke is a Managing Partner in the General Partner, and is one of the founders of HMC. He serves on the boards of Innovative Biosensors, MaxCyte and nContact, as well as Southeast BIO, Innovation Depot, Biotechnology Association of Alabama, and Alabama Innovation Council, where he serves as Chairman. Mr. Brooke is also a board observer at Optimal. He has been advising early-stage companies for more than twenty years and previously served on the boards of NovaMin, AV Holdings (Atherotech), Visador, Nationwide Homes and Emageon (NASDAQ: EMAG). He is also a Partner of the Harbinger/Aurora Venture Funds and serves on their Investment Committee and Members’ Advisory Committee. As an Executive Vice President and Board member of HMC since its inception, Mr. Brooke initially served as HMC General Counsel and later as its Chief Operating Officer. Before joining HMC, Mr. Brooke served as General Counsel of Harbert Corporation. Prior to that role, he was a founder and managing partner of Wallace, Jordan, Ratliff and Brandt, a law firm in Birmingham, AL. He has been a guest lecturer on venture capital for the MBA programs at the University of Alabama and the University of Alabama-Birmingham, and he previously served as Chairman of Southeast BIO. He holds a degree in law (J.D.) and a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from the University of Alabama.

Wayne L. Hunter

Managing Partner 

Wayne L. Hunter is a Managing Partner in the General Partner. Mr. Hunter joined HMC in 2002 and serves on the boards of Intelliject, Movero, PeopleMatter, TapRoot, and Unitrends, as well as the Florida Venture Forum and Virginia’s Center for Innovative Technology and the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Investment Authority. Prior to joining HMC, he was a founding Managing Director and Head of Wachovia’s Technology Investment Banking Group. In addition, he was a member of Wachovia's Private Equity/Venture Capital Fund Investment Committee and served on Wachovia’s Investment Banking Management Committee. He has more than 20 years of experience working with leading entrepreneurs and venture capitalists in the Southeast. During his tenure in investment banking, he advised on more than 100 financing and M&A transactions totaling $24 billion. His mergers and acquisitions and financial advisory experience encompass the internet, software, IT services, communications services and equipment sectors. Mr. Hunter holds a degree in law (J.D.) from the University of Alabama School of Law and a Bachelor of Science degree from Auburn University.

Thomas D. Roberts III

Partner 

Thomas D. Roberts III is a Partner in the General Partner, and joined HMC in 2002 as a founding member of the HVP Investment Team. He currently serves on the boards of ControlScan, Invincea, and JackBe and is a board observer at Clarabridge. He also led HVP’s investments in and sat on the board of Agility Healthcare. In December 2010, he was selected to serve a two year term as a Venture Capital Consultant to the Defense Venture Catalyst Initiative (DeVenCi), a Department of Defense (DoD) program to identify and accelerate adoption of emerging commercial technologies by DoD constituents (the military). He is a board member of Mid-Atlantic Venture Association (“MAVA”) and co-chair of the 2012 MAVA Capital Connection Conference. Before joining HMC, Mr. Roberts was a senior investment banker for Wachovia (and predecessor firms First Union Securities and Wheat First Butcher Singer), where he originated and successfully executed over forty public and private equity and M&A advisory transactions for clients in the technology, telecom and healthcare sectors. He was a founding member of First Union’s Technology Investment Banking Group. Prior to investment banking, he was with Markowitz & McNaughton, a strategy consulting firm, specializing in competitive analysis, market opportunity assessment, bench-marking and acquisition buy-side search and due diligence services for Fortune 500 clients. He holds a Master of Business Administration degree and a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Virginia.

Robert L. Crutchfield

Venture Partner

Bob Crutchfield is a Venture Partner in the General Partner. Mr. Crutchfield joined HMC in September 2008 and serves as a Board Member of Optimal and as a board observer for ControlScan, Innovative Biosensors, MaxCyte and OpenQ. In addition to his responsibilities at HMC, he serves as the Chairman of the Commercialization Sub-Committee for the Alabama Innovation Council Study Commission, serves on the Steering Committee of the Alabama Obesity Institute at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, is a Venture Fellow at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, is a Visiting Executive at Auburn University and is a member of the Board of Directors for the Southeast Medical Device Association, the Birmingham Venture Club, the Alabama Launch Pad, and the Atlanta Venture Forum. Mr. Crutchfield also serves as a member of the Investment Advisory Board for the Florida Institute for the Commercialization of Public Research. Prior to joining HVP, Mr. Crutchfield served as Senior Vice President/General Manager of the Pharmacy Services Division at U.S. Oncology, a privately held, vertically integrated cancer care provider network with cancer clinics in more than 440 sites of service and a physician network consisting of over 1,000 medical oncologists and radiation oncologists. His division was responsible for approximately $2 billion of annual revenue and under his leadership the division’s EBITDA grew to over $80 million. Mr. Crutchfield was also a Senior Executive at CardinalHealth, where he served as Vice President of New Ventures. While with Cardinal Health, he built and launched a new surgical products business unit through licensing of new technologies, acquisitions and creating a new North American sales channel. In 1995, Mr. Crutchfield founded Surgical Innovations and Services, Inc. (SIS), a surgical laser management company. Under his leadership, SIS became a leader in the emerging outsource management sector, with over 300 hospitals and surgery centers under contract with SIS for management oversight and delivery of their surgical laser programs. In 2000, SIS merged with Surgical Laser Technologies, Inc. (SLTI) a publicly traded surgical laser-manufacturing firm. Mr. Crutchfield continued as President of SIS and served as VP of Sales, Marketing and Business Development for SLTI, until he exited the company following its acquisition by publicly-traded Photomedex, Inc. Mr. Crutchfield has launched five successful new business ventures during his private and corporate career and has lead four M&A transactions. Mr. Crutchfield is a graduate of the University of Georgia and holds Bachelor of Science degrees in Political Science and Chemistry.

Brian C. Carney

Principal

Brian C. Carney is a Principal in the General Partner. Mr. Carney joined HMC in 2007 and currently serves on the boards of OpenQ and Privaris. Mr. Carney is also a board observer for Intelliject, JackBe, nContact and PeopleMatter. Prior to joining HMC, Mr. Carney was an associate with Morgan Stanley Venture Partners where he evaluated and executed healthcare venture capital and growth equity investment opportunities. Prior to Morgan Stanley Venture Partners, Mr. Carney was a financial analyst in Morgan Stanley's Healthcare Investment Banking Group. Mr. Carney holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Virginia and a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Washington & Lee University.

Thomas I. Walton-Cale

Senior Analyst

Thomas Walton-Cale is a Senior Analyst in the General Partner. Mr. Walton-Cale joined HMC in 2011 to assist in the area of financial analysis, portfolio company monitoring, investment due diligence, and market research. Prior to joining HMC, Mr. Walton-Cale worked in the Investment Banking Group of BB&T Capital Markets where he participated in a variety of merger and acquisition, leveraged buyout, and capital markets transactions across a broad range of industries. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Commerce from the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia where he concentrated in Finance and Management.
