Sometimes I’m in a hurry.

Let me preface this by stating that I don’t condone or encourage speeding or breaking any highway laws. I’m just going to tell you what I do.

I have a couple different approaches I take if I want to drive over the posted speed limit on the highway.

1. The mirror.

Simply wait for someone to pass you and mirror his speed. Simple, effective, and he’s the one the cop’s gonna see first.

But, keep this in mind — My brother and two of his biker buddies were crammin’ on their Harleys at 3 a.m. on an empty stretch of highway. Empty, save for the police car that started to give chase.

My brother pulled over.

When he asked the officer why he didn’t give chase and ticket the others, the officer replied, “We only ticket whoever stops first.”

2. (and the one I generally use) The fox and the hound

Do your speeding in the right hand lane. When a policeman’s radar detector goes off, they instinctively look to the left hand lane to spot the speeder. Staying in the right hand lane as much as possible, greatly increases the chances that you’ll be overlooked. Further, it keeps you more aware of your surroundings as you need to look ahead and make plans.

Maybe I should have began this post with my “two second rule.”

Under all driving conditions, never look at anything longer than two seconds. Always be moving your eyes. From the rear-view mirror, to the front of the car, to the side-view mirror, to the front of the car, to the billboard, to down the road, to . . . well, you get the idea. But the two second rule can make you a much safer driver by keeping you more aware.

And, safe driving is all about awareness. spacer

So stay alert, stay aware, and stay outa the fast lane.

grrrr . . .

I’m trying to get some clickable smilies for Anna’s blog. So I’m installing something here to get it right before I do it there.

I can’t seem to get rid of the durned image border though. spacer

If I had it to do over again . . .

I’d blog.

Yep. If I had it to do over again, I’d enter a blog site into any seo contest.

Blogs seem to be doing well in the SEO World Championship. And they’ve done well in past contests.

The current “GlobalWarming Awareness2007” challenge still has a couple months to go. Although we’re hangin’ tough, I’m sure there’s going to be some competitor shananigans afoot soon enough.

We’ll see how it goes.

Wikipedia shuts out link spammers

There must be a lot of entrants in the SEO World Championships. Or, at least, one very naughty one.

“Wikipedia has started to instruct search engines to ignore links to external websites.”

The measure was taken in response to a search engine optimization content in which webmasters are challenged to gain the highest ranking with major search engines for the query ‘Globalwarming awareness2007′.

The GlobalWarming Awareness2007 Campaign

The GlobalWarming Awareness2007 campaign is in full swing.

GlobalWarming Awareness2007 is an SEO contest to see who can get to the top of the three major seach engines (google, yahoo, and msn) for the search phrase “GlobalWarming Awareness2007.”

This is a great opportunity to learn more about SEO and globalwarming.

Forum University’s GlobalWarming Awareness2007 entry into the contest is located at global-warming-2007.com.

We’ve been as high as first place (out of over 1200 contestants) and as low as, well, not even on the leaderboard of the top 100.

We’ve settled into a number three (fluctuating within the top 6) position for the past few weeks. With some work, we should be able to sustain this.

It’ll be easier when everyone links to global-warming-2007.com spacer

Untied we stand

I can’t tell you how long ago I stopped tieing my shoelaces.

I can’t tell you why I stopped.

I think it had to do with the occasional shoe coming untied, stepping on the string, and not liking it.

One of the first things I do when I get new tennis shoes is, lace them and find the sweet spot of a tie so I can slip them on and off like loafers.

Not that I like loafing. I just hate stepping on them durned shoelaces.

How to be a great conversationalist

I’m often told in social and business situations what a great conversationalist I am.

As most of you know, I don’t write much. I’m a man of few words. I have a tendency to write and say only as much as is needed.

Still I am often left with remarks that exclaim how great I am to enter into discussions with. I will share my three point secrets of conversing with you.

1. Listen.
2. Refer to #1.
3. See #2.

Listening is the best way to be known for your conversation skills. That is, to actively listen and understand what the other party is saying. The occasional question on points you don’t fully understand only enhances your “conversational skills.”

That’s about all I have to say on the topic.

If you want to be a great conversationalist, be a great listener.

Preparing for Extreme Cold

If you must drive, be prepared. Carry a winter survival kit in your trunk.

  • Tire chains (practice installing before you get into the snow)
  • Small snow shovel
  • Extra clothing (including hat)
  • Work gloves
  • Blanket
  • Traction mats (floor mats will work)
  • Ice scraper (plastic, not metal)
  • Booster cables (good ones)
  • Small bag of abrasive materials for traction (sand, salt, or kitty litter)
  • Flashlight
  • Cloth or roll of paper towels
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Warning devices-reflective triangles or battery-powered flashers
  •

    Use caution while driving.

  • Lower your speed when driving on wet roads. Excessive speed is the major cause of accidents during the winter. Remember, the posted speed limits are for dry weather, not wet, slippery roads.
  • Leave plenty of extra distance between your car and the vehicle in front of you. This will allow you the extra time necessary to respond to any situation. You will also need more room to stop in case of emergency.
  • If you are driving on a four (or more) lane highway that’s wet, leave yourself an “out”. Do not drive at the same speed right next to someone who may slide into you on a slippery road.
  • Whenever possible, use low gears when driving downhill and around curves on wet roads. But don’t shift to low gears recklessly as this can cause your rear wheels to lock and lose control of your vehicle.
  • To stop on ice and snow, lightly apply your brakes. This also applies to vehicles with anti-lock braking systems.
  • To begin driving on ice and snow, do it slowly for maximum traction and less wheel spinning (Remember, the idea is to not spin your tires. Spinning them more isn’t the answer). On very slick surfaces, start in second gear to prevent wheel spinning.
  • If you’re required to use chains, I would never drive over 25 mph. Your chains, car body, and tires will remain in better shape if you drive at a lower speed.
  • If you find yourself in a skid, don’t brake heavily, don’t jerk the steering wheel, and don’t panic. Instead, turn your steering wheel into the direction of the skid and gently brake.
  • When you park your car in freezing weather, avoid using the parking brake. The brake linings could freeze to the brake drum and disk. If necessary, block tires with rocks or other heavy objects.
  • Always use your seatbelt when you get in your car and insist on it for all passengers.

The new girl in my life.

Yup. It happened. I have a new girl I see five days a week.

Ya’ll know I have this thing for Martha. Well, Rachael sucked me in because of my attraction to Martha. :s

The morning news gets over at 10 am here and Martha doesn’t come on ’til 11. When they added Rachael to the line up, I tried shutting off my TV from 10-11. But I ended up missing too many Martha’s!

So I thought I’d just leave the TV on the same channel and let the new girl ramble in the background.

She was a little too bright and perky for me. But after listening to her for a few weeks and understanding her passion and expertise in the kitchen, I’m a fan.
