Designing Women: Veerle Pieters

Veerle Pieters, a graphic designer and web designer living in Belgium, caught our attention with her fresh Illustrator design portfolio, and her lively blog featuring many great articles and tutorials... Veerle Pieters

Photoshop: Carved in Wood

A reader wrote in with a client who wants his web site menu buttons to be on a tree -- looking hand-carved. So, this tutorial gives you nice sign boards with the type routed in to nail to the tree. Carved in Wood

Photoshop: Changing Colors

We get quite a few requests for this kind of technique for people colorizing houses, cars, people's clothing, and from time to time a boat or two. In this tutorial, we must change the color of a boat, then apply lettering to the side to show the client the finished lettering job.

Photoshop: Clipping Path makes a Hole in the Doughnut

More frequently asked questions: "...if I were creating a clipping path of a donut, how would I put a path around the outside and the inside of a donut?" In this tutorial, we using image clipping paths to create a hole where the background shows through!

Photoshop: Saving an old, faded photo

Photoshop 911 question: "... I've read plenty of tutorials on how to repair dents and scratches with the clone/stamp tool, but haven't found anything to help with the color problems" In this tutorial, we bring this old photo back to life with a lot of adjustment layers

Color It! 4.5 for Max OS X

Wow! A name from the past arrived in my mailbox today, Wayne Davis! We haven't heard from Wayne since Y2K, but he's been busy. His firm, Digimagearts has completely overhauled a program called "Color IT" -- many of you may remember ColorIT! as the very cool Photoshop surrogate from the 1990s. It's back, and greatly enhanced. Check it out at: www.digimagearts.com

Mailbag: Gorgeous Photography from National Geographic

My industry insider Karen Thomas posted me last week, and I just had to pass along to you -- the gorgeous new photo library featuring National Geographic Photos. From animals to underwater to storms and nature, now you can share some of the finest photography in the world...

For a slideshow see: www.siljagoetz.com/01new/visor.htm or visit Silja at www.siljagoetz.com

Mailbag: Quiz and Stump the Chump

Last month's mailbag "stump the chump" for Illustrator tips for doing match forumlas was a bust. We got about 60 responses, none of which actually answered the question. Sorry.
Additionally, if you've taken our "Design Quiz" expecting to get a test score we're sorry but the CGI broke, and trashed more than a thousand tests. We still can't get it to work -- however, for the MAY issue, we'll have the quizzes back up, complete with scoring. Stand by.

Mailbag: Printed DTG issues

Too many people each month request a "print" sample or issue of DTG. Once again, remember that we stopped printing and PDF editions of DTG back in the mid 1990s. It's all web based now.

Mailbag: Getting Started in Graphic Design

Last month's letter from a reader just starting out in the field of freelance graphic design prompted a topic in the Design Cafe. We're inviting some of you old veterans of the industry to come in and share some of your wisdom to help these young up-and-coming designers get off on the right foot. Post at:www.dtg-forums.com

Are you smarter than a 5th Grader ...

No, it's not Jeff Foxworthy's new TV show... but it may as well be. If you read some of this month's comments from readers you see a few snags: some of the web owners aren't too happy with their Web Site Critiques

& ELSE...

This month's &Else includes: I-SPY Prevention Act of 2007 * Print with any printer in the world * Travel and PHOTOGRAPHY Off the Charts * PitStop with Adobe Acrobat 8 support * New Life for Old Photos and a half dozen more! &Else!

As we head toward spring, and summer, those graduates will be pouring out of school and hitting the streets for jobs. Congratulations on a great job in your education -- now we'll be looking forward to seeing the great work you do in the future.

And, once again you've already wasted a perfectly good hour reading the DTG newsletter. Hopefully all is not wasted and you've gained at least one helpful tidbit of info

Thanks for reading...
