"The 4th International Workshop on Trustworthy Internet of People, Things & Services"

Background

The 1st International Internet of Things and Services (IoTS), a 2-day Workshop at the TrustAMI08 Conference Sophia AntiPolis in September 2008 attracted a considerable number of high quality contributions including both papers and demonstrations and around 40 delegates attended this first European workshop on the IoTS then. The following Internet of Things & Services (IoTS) Network Session at the European ICT Conference, ICT 2008 Lyon, in November 2008 attracted about 70 attendees. Another thematically related Network Session on “Virtual User Systems for AAL” in the European ICT Conference, ICT2008 Lyon, November 2008, attracted excellent contributors and an audience of around 100. These motivated the 3rd International
Workshop on Trustworthy Internet of People, Things and Services (IoPTS) held on 2nd December 2009 in Novotel, Brussels, where 13 selected papers were presented and discussed amongst over 20 delegates including leading researchers from Europe and beyond; from such major players as IBM, Fraunhofer Institute, SAP (Europe and South Africa) and US Department of Naval Systems Research.

This year again we confidently invite excellent contributions to what will be our 4th International Workshop on the Future Internet Architectures (FIA) theme of “Trustworthy Internet of People, Things and Services”. Thus the 4th International Conference on the theme of Trustworthy Internet of People, Things and Services stands at the confluence of Future Secure, Trust-based Internet, and, the vision of Ambient Intelligence as underpinned by pervasive-assistive technologies serving the IoPTS within the framework of semantically interoperable service-oriented and model-driven architectures.

Such systems will have to be evaluated within challenging proving grounds such as in Ambient Assistive Living and other emergent FIA application domains e.g. SmartGrids-MobiPetsCloud, martCities, Green ICT and eMobility.

This workshop will interest academic and industrial researchers, innovation strategists as well as IoPTS solution integrators

Motivation

The vision of the Future “Internet of People, Things and Services, IoPTS” is gaining momentum in the emergent academic, industrial and market innovation arenas. Many key enabling technologies are already emerging such as secure middleware and service-oriented architectures, virtualisation, RFID, and sensor networking. The vision of cloud computing (eCloud) further motivates interest in research and innovation to underpin ubiquitous IoPTS integration. However the promises of the Future Internet in empowering cooperativity support to underpin optimal eMobility, eHealth, eSecurity, eCloud and eMedia services delivery have to be realised in a societally safe, trustworthy, ethical and acceptable manner as well as in increasingly scalable, sustainable and affordable ways; so as to push forwards the frontiers of digital inclusivity amongst citizens.

Based on the seamless integration of embedded networked devices and services, the “Trustworthy Internet of People, Things and Services” involves also the secure and automatic discovery and identification of Things and Services, e.g. within the Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) for smart sensing and metering, communication, service selection and composition, security resolution, secure dynamic contracting and deployment of, and payment for, services.

However, the envisioned world of Ambient Intelligence and pervasive computing would be closer to realising its full potential if the embedded devices were able to communicate in semantically secure interoperable ways with each other so as to cooperate and complete tasks securely and dependably.

This implies at least the expectation of certain baseline capabilities to be fulfilled by any networked things (e.g. devices/sensors) in terms of secure identity and access management (IAM), and transparency of their available resources (power, CPU, memory, functions) either directly or through proxy services.

Purpose

This 4th IoPTS Workshop will discuss the above issues through theoretical and applied research presentations, prototypes demonstrations and discussion panels.

The Trustworthy Internet of People, Things and Services (IoPTS) embraces a range of exciting internet-enabled technologies for individual life/work-style support as well as an opportunity for commercial and business exploitation of emerging technology platforms e.g. to underpin the vision of Ambient Assisted Living.

The IoPTS are to support pervasive ambient intelligence of objects and/or services through:

• i) context-based computation and
• ii) privacy-security-preferences-QoS-aware selection, resolution and execution of “smart” service-oriented model-driven systems and services.

This requires a framework for semantic-cooperative interoperability and security resolution so as to adequately support the required controlled orchestration of tasks within sensor/enterprise environments (eco-systems) supported by context management, communications, resources management, and context-sensitive privacy policy maintenance and enactment (to be fulfilled on-device or proxy-enabled depending on the device resources).
In this context, several pressing research issues arise:

• - The assumption of the secure interconnectivity of (social networks of) people and physicalthings and the ability to automatically take advantage of context information and computation toinvoke appropriate action naturally highlights issues of privacy, security and trust.
• - The need for seamless interoperability and re-configurability of Things and Services for flexible end-to-end solution integration highlights the challenges of secure service provisioning, composition and security-and-QoS-based dynamic applications contracting and the use of privacy-enhancing technologies within the Internet of Things & Services Architecture.

The Confluence of Research Themes of Interest

Accordingly the papers presented in the proposed workshop are expected to cover the following areas:

• - Device-level ontology, context-reasoning and publishing

The Deadlines are as follows:
