Back in 2006, Steve and I approached the Winter Gardens in Morecambe to see if we could possibly investigate the Grade II listed theatre, with the hope that it could also be a good source of revenue in helping towards their Restoration Fund.

We met with Dave Algar who was one of the 'Friends of the Winter Gardens' at the time, and Dave said that he couldn't see a problem, as a small local group run by Madam Mitch, was already holding similar events, but a meeting with the committee was needed before a decision could be made.

The rest, as they say, is history.

UK Shadow Seekers have always had a soft spot for the Winter Gardens and like us, other groups have had the privilege to investigate this magnificent building, Returning on many occasion

Plans for bringing the theatre back into use for the community still going on.
Concerts, drama, exhibitions, presentations, sport, dances, meetings are their plans for the immediate future. Find out more here

But trying to raise much needed funds, we now find that a big chunk of this will be used to repair the roof, after thieves caused a leak when they stole lead flashings between 28th September and 6th October 2011.

The building was closed in 1977 and is owned by a local conservation group.

After speaking to Evelyn Archer, from the Friends of Winter Gardens Group, she told us that Emergency repairs have been made after rain water poured through the exposed ceilings but that the theft and the resulting damage is estimated to cost up to £10,000 to replace and repair.

The Winter Gardens was built in 1870 and included a ballroom, seawater baths and bars.

Campaigners raising funds to restore Morecambe's Winter Gardens are vowing to continue the work despite the theft of a large quantity of lead from the roof of the historic building.

With Evelyn’s permission and with their website down at the moment for a revamp, we have added a donation button here in the hope that all those that have attended the Winter Gardens will show their support by donating to help towards the Restoration Fund.
