3D ads and some steps towards integration with Windows Live maps

We have been playing with several 3D platforms lately, in order to offer some more integration of Tagzania with these interesting applications, not only with Google Earth. And while using Microsoft's Windows Live new 3D views, we've come to find floating advertising boards over several US cities... This clickable enormous panel, for instance, is trying to sell us Nissan cars somewhere over Los Angeles...

If you find more 3D ads, you can bookmark them at Tagzania. We've updated a little bit our Windows Live Tagzai! bookmarlet. Install the Win Live 2 bookmarklet version, and when if you see some curious vista on the 3D views while navegating through Live.com, then in the share menu, you have the permalink, click on that, and then use the bookmarklet. Not only will the latitude and longitude be registered in your Tagzania account: the precise tridimensional viepoint permalink of Live.com will also be saved as a link or resource documenting that place.

Here's another awesome example: not an ad, in this case, but Frank Gehry's Disney Hall in Downtown L.A., not far from that red Nissan.

Only several US cities have this kind of 3D renderings of buildings. But 3D rendering reaches the whole world in Windows Live, and so it's useful and fun everywhere. So, we've introduced a novelty. Under the maps of invididual locations in Tagzania, you have the option to open other mapping sites to see other perspectives, but now, we've added a section for 3D apps.

Therefore, if you go to the place where the people behind Tagzania work, here in Eibar, in the Basque Country, and click on the Live.com click below the map, tyou'll land in a map like this:

You'll also see that in that new 3D link section there's a World Wind link. Well, that's another 3D environement. If you have NASA's World Wind installed, clicking on that link will prompt the program to open, and you will fly to that location. We've set up a page in our documentation section dedicated to these 3D platforms: Google Earth, Windows Live and World Wind featured there so far, but we hope to add more.

NASA's World Wind only works on Windows, and Windows Live 3D maps are only visible within Internet Explorer (requires the installation of a plug-in, and some tricks are necessary for non-US web users, explained here), yet, they're valuable tools, we believe. For Firefox or non-Windows users, clicking on the Live.com 3D link at any Tagzania location will still work: you will see Microsoft's maps in 2D, simply.

So, those who can, enjoy Windows Live in 3D. Make sure you install our new bookmarklet for that platform, and start bookmarking stunning views. You may find places here and there... but you store them at your Tagzania account, and we'll try to offer you all possible viewpoints for that location, 3D platforms included.

If you want to install the Live.com 3D plug-in, the trick for non-US residents mentioned in the post is no longer needed. More info here. Those with the plug-in already installed don't need any upgrade.
