Does Kleen-Bore Provide Instructions On How To Clean A Firearm?

We recommend following the instructions in your owner's manual, especially if you intend to break the firearm down. Most of our kits include general cleaning instructions, but you may also call or write to request instructions. They are also available on our Web site under "Firearms Safety and Cleaning Tips ."

Why Kleen-Bore Bore Brushes?

There are numerous reasons. Kleen-Bore offers a variety of material choices for bore brushes. The brushes are properly sized to fit the designated bore. The bristles feature a straight bristle as opposed to one that has been crimped. Some manufacturers crimp to give the appearance of a denser filled brush, however, this reduces its cleaning ability. A straight bristle is a better cleaning tool because of its rigidity. We also package o bore brushes in a convenient, reusable tube that offers protection and is labeled for quick and easy reference.

What Brush Material Should I use for Bore Cleaning?

This is a usually based on cleaning frequency. In some cases, you may want to reference the firearms manual for their recommendations. For most users, we find the Phosphor Bronze Brush to be preferred. It is rigid enough to lift fouling from the grooves in the rifling, but softer than the bore so it doesn't scratch. If you're an occasional shooter, nylon is a good choice. Unlike Kleen-Bore's Nylon Bore Brushes, some synthetic brushes on the market today do not offer the rigidity needed to adequately clean. Our brushes offer a thicker, heavy-duty bristle that is more effective in cleaning.

What Are The Brush Thread Sizes of the Connector Couplings?

Most of the major brands are using #8-32 threads for rifle/handgun accessories and #5/16" - 27 thread for shotgun accessories. If you plan to cross match another brand cleaning tool with Kleen-Bore, please refer to the chart below.

Kleen-Bore Brush & Mop Thread Sizes

TYPE COUPLING

THREAD SIZE

Handgun/Rifle

#8-32 Male

Shotgun/Black powder

#5/16-27 Male

What Are The Bore Sizes Of Shotgun Gauges?

  • 410 Caliber - .410
  • 28 Gauge - .550
  • 20 Gauge - .615
  • 16 Gauge - .670
  • 12 Gauge - .730
  • 10 Gauge - .775

Please note - Shotgun chokes will vary the above dimensions at the muzzle depending on the choke restriction.

Why Can't I Get A Clean Patch When Using Lead Away?

Lead Away chemically loosens and lifts lead build-up from the bore. While using Lead Away, you will notice silver streaks of lead on the patch that has been extracted. As a rule, when the streaks of lead no longer appear on the cloth, this part of the job is done because the bore is free of surface lead. If you continue the cleaning process, Lead Away Patch will continue to be blackened with further use. This occurs because the gunmetal composite contains microscopic particles of lead that have been added for easier machining. After using Lead Away, use a solvent and a clean patch to clean residue Lead Away chemicals out of the bore. Finish the job by lightly oiling the bore. If you plan to do a lot of lead bullet shooting, use a light coating of TW25 B High-Tech lubricant to treat the bore for easier future clean up.

Which rod is better ... Brass, Stainless or Steel?

There is no right answer regarding rod materials. Each cleaning rod has its own merits and tends to be a personal preference. Stainless is extremely strong and rigid and offers a smooth, ground finish. Brass is softer material and it is usually less abrasive if wiped cleaned during regular use. Its drawbacks are vulnerability to bending if not used with care. Also, if not cleaned regularly, metal fouling can embed into its surface, creating an abrasion factor. A regular steel rod with a smooth finish is a good choice because it offers strength and is reasonably priced. It is also hard enough not to embed metal fouling, but softer than a gun bore and with proper usage it is safe on the bore.

What About Coated Rods?

If shooting and cleaning are frequent, a coated rod should be a part of your cleaning supplies. It offers an excellent margin of safety to protect the bore, throat and muzzle from damage. Kleen-Bore offers a coated rod using a steel rod as its sub-base for strength and stability. Our Saf-T-Coating is a unique process because it is heat bonded to the metal. When used properly and kept centered to the bore, it will last for many cleanings. This protective coating provides a slick, non-metallic and non-abrasive finish that protects during the cleaning process. The finish is hard enough to minimize metallic fouling from adhering to the surface. It is always recommended to wipe the rod clean after use to remove any abrasive fouling or caustic bore cleaning chemicals that may have a negative affect the coating when not removed. Kleen-Bore offers a selection of coated rods to cover most handguns and rifles.

What About Composites?

Composites do not offer rigidity and the jointed areas have a tendency to break down, especially in the threaded areas.

Which Should I Use, A Patch Holder Or A Cleaning Jag With My Patches?

This is a personal choice usually based on cleaning frequency. Patch holders are an integral part of many of the kits that we offer because of their universal nature. A patch holder works fine for occasional cleaning and can be used to clean other calibers/gauges by changing the patch size, although they take more time to swab the bore as compared to a caliber specific jag. For frequent cleaning, jags offer a faster and more thorough job of bore cleaning. They work well to keep constant pressure on the entire inside wall of the bore for a quick and efficient cleaning. Kleen-Bore offers brass jags for rifle and handgun cleaning, and aluminum and Multi-Choke Nylon jags for shotgun cleaning. A bore specific cleaning jag accompanied by the properly sized cleaning patch will give you the best results.

Which Should I Use, A Cotton Patch or a Synthetic Patch?

Cotton usually offers better cleaning power because of its ability to absorb liquids better. Some synthetics on the market today offer very little cleaning power because of the composite makeup. Kleen-Bore offers synthetic waffle weave patches that use an absorbent material, as well a waffle weave design to trap bore fouling for easy extraction.

Which Is Stronger S-10 #10 Solvent Or C-10 #10 Copper Cutter?

S-10 (#10 Bore Cleaning Solvent) was formulated for the cleaning of metallic and powder fouling. As chemical technology progressed, so did the need to remove stubborn copper build-up from the bore's rifling.

C-10 (Copper Cutter) was formulated for removing copper fouling along with lead and powder fouling. Shortly after Kleen-Bore started marketing C-10, our shooting team marveled at how efficient it removed plastic build-up after many rounds of clay bird practice. This was an unexpected plus for this outstanding copper solvent. For shooters who are unaware, shotgun wads leave behind melted plastic in the chamber from the extreme heat that is generated from the explosion of the shell.

The bottom line is Solvent #10 is great for lead and powder fouling removal; Copper Cutter goes a little further in the removal of copper and plastic buildup. It also has special chemical indicator in the formula that quickly turns blue, indicating that copper traces are still in the bore. If your cleaning patch comes out clean, you know all the copper fouling is gone!
