So, this weekend didn't involve fishing - it involved in-laws and packing and moving boxes, and fighting one big threatening fire. I preferred the fire fight.

I would much rather leave this type of thing up to Chase and his giant firefighting boots, but it was pretty cool to stop the fire on the downwind and up-hillside, preventing it from getting to the house (in-law's neighbours house). It took a couple of solid hours of whacking flames, running water, and digging trench, but the blisters were worth it! When our side of the fire was controlled we had a chance to sit back and watch the 2 helicopters bucket water from a pond to dump on the other side of the fire. The wind kept shifting from west to south to east then back to west. It made fighting it difficult, but in the end, only one building was burned, a mile of fence, and a few bee hives (and my wife's socks).

On the funny side, the fire truck arrived and immediately got stuck in the mud on the opposite side of the fire from the house. I guess the redneck volunteer department guys were used to driving their big tired trucks...

In a world where emergency services are being cut and you can't trust your neighbours, it is wonderful to see something like this turn out good.
