2012 NSLS/CFN Joint Users' Meeting

The Joint National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) and Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN) Users' Meeting provides a venue for scientists from diverse disciplines who use the NSLS and CFN facilities to share their work and discuss future directions for their research. New results and advances in experimental capabilities in synchrotron radiation and the nanoscale science research will be highlighted

This year's theme, “Expanding the Toolbox for 21^st Century Science,” will highlight the vital roles served by the Department of Energy’s NSLS, NSLS-II, and CFN, with an emphasis on new tools that have recently been developed for our current facilities and planning for the upcoming transition to NSLS-II. The program includes invited talks, workshops, poster session, and exhibits showcasing new technology and instrumentation; all offering opportunities to learn about the latest developments in synchrotron and nanoscience experimentation that can impact your own research. 

A special session will be held in the afternoon of Monday, May 21^st to host a significant discussion on planning for the transition from NSLS to NSLS-II. User feedback will be critical for moving forward on this issue, so all NSLS (and prospective NSLS-II) users are strongly encouraged to plan on attending this session.

Plenary sessions will be held Monday and Tuesday mornings, with workshops in the afternoons. The plenary session on Monday, May 21^st will include the Keynote lecture as well as updates from Harriet Kung, Associate Director of Basic Energy Sciences; Sam Aronson, Director, Brookhaven National Laboratory; Steve Dierker, Associate Laboratory Director for Photon Sciences, Erik Johnson, Deputy Director of Programs, Photon Sciences Directorate; and Emilio Mendez, Director, Center for Functional Nanomaterials. The plenary session on Tuesday, May 22^nd will include scientific talks and updates from the Brookhaven Photon Sciences and Center for Functional Nanomaterials User Executive Committees.

We are extremely pleased to announce that our Keynote Speaker will be Gina Kolata, bestselling author and award-winning senior writer for science and medicine for the New York Times. Gina has traveled around the country lecturing at universities and medical schools about a variety of scientific topics, demystifying scientific and personal health issues for the general public and passing on her considerable knowledge of science writing and communication.

Both Monday and Tuesday morning Plenary Sessions, as well as the Monday afternoon transition discussion, are open to the public free of charge.

In anticipation of the soon coming occupancy of the NSLS-II, this year’s banquet will be held in the NSLS-II building.

• General Registration Fee: $220.00 - Students/Post Docs: $110.00
• Registration Fee includes: Unlimited Workshops, Monday's Main Meeting Luncheon, Exhibitor Reception and Poster Sessions and the Sunday Ice Cream Social. 

Additional Fees:

• Reception Only Tickets: $20.00
• Main Meeting Luncheon: $20.00 (for those attending Plenary Session only and would like to have lunch)

Banquet: $50.00 General / $25.00 Students

Main Meeting Plenary Session:
The Users' Executive Committees, the representative bodies of both Users’ Associations, cordially invite all to attend the plenary sessions on Monday, May 21 and Tuesday, May 22, as well as the Monday afternoon transition discussion, free of charge. We  warmly invite you to register for the workshops and other events.

Deadlines:

• Friday, May 4 - Last day to register without paying a $25.00 late fee.
• Friday, May 11 - Registration Closes  - Registrations submitted after May 11th will be processed on the first day of the meeting Monday, May 21st. Registration fees can be paid in person at the Meeting Registration Desk
• Friday, May 11 - Last day to submit a poster.
• Friday, May 11- All meeting attendees, including speakers and organizers, who plan to stay onsite at BNL, must register in BNL's Guest Information System (GIS). After May 11th, it will be necessary to secure accommodations off site.(link to accommodation info)

This joint meeting and associated workshops are supported by registration fees paid by the participants. Social events, lunches, and coffee breaks are provided to registered attendees primarily by our exhibitors and sponsors, and in part by the Photon Sciences Directorate (PSD) and Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN)'s Brookhaven Science Associates' funding. The Users' Meeting Planning Committee consists of users and staff of the Photon Sciences Directorate (NSLS) and CFN. Administrative support for the meeting is provided by BNL's Photon Sciences Directorate and CFN Departments.
