The Humane Mousetrap

November 10th, 2006

So, as some of you know, I’ve had a roommate who was living in the walls and snacking on my food when I wasn’t around. So, I put a plan in affect I found on Chris Glass’ blog some time ago & I thought it was a brilliant idea. A few months ago, I realized I had to implement this idea when I discovered some bread snacked on by a little critter.

So, I set the trap and waited… nothing. I built the ramp idea and came home to a toilet paper roll that fell into the trashcan with bait missing but, no mouse. I began to think that maybe my trashcan was too short or the little guy left—however, I tried a few more times. Each time, I felt that the mouse had been there but, jumped out. After I tried a few times I decided I definitely needed a taller trashcan. I visited K-Mart after being at my folks house one night and bought a taller one and re-set the trap. A few days passed and then today after work, I came home to this…

I didn’t see a mouse, just the same scenario I saw each and every time but, with some special droppings this time around. So, I shook the can a bit and to much surprise, this little guy came out of the tube…

Great success! He started jumping super high, like halfway up this can (which happens to be about the height of the old can). So, no wonder he was never in the other can when I checked. My friend John happened to be here when all of this was happening. I think we were both enjoying the situation (me more than him I think) because I just beat my arch-nemesis sort of speak.

After basking in my success, I put the lid on the trashcan, taped it shut and loaded it into my car. John and I drove to a small field and I let him out, he hopped and ran like a bat out of hell to the nearest tree. The little guy was freaked out obviously. I have to admit, it felt good to be that humane to a little critter.

I have to say thanks to Chris Glass’ blog for the idea.

See my flickr photo set of this (with notes).

Ghost.

That mouse lived a good life in your walls, snacking on your food! Look how fat and well fed he is, and such a nice long tail.
