1. What is generationrice?

generationrice is an online magazine that strives to celebrate the Asian and Asian American experience. A new issue was released every 15th of the month, ten times a year for the last four and a half years. Forty-plus issues later, it is now officially closed.

2. What is the generationrice mission statement?

inform. revolutionize. inspire.

generationrice hopes to inform its readers about the issues, the people and the events of the Asian and Asian American communities worldwide while revolutionizing the way the Asian voice is presented by using new media in the hope that all its efforts would inspire readers to act and react and contribute for the betterment of society.

3. What's the generationrice history and background?

An idea that began in July 1999, the first issue was released that October. generationrice was edited by cia_b while contributors all over the world made each issue possible.

generationrice 5.0 is also made possible by Thalia and Ari of avocadolite, with greymatter software and dreamhost hosting.

generationrice was based in New York City until it officially closed in October 2004.

4. How did you come up with the name generationrice?

Rice is the one thing that binds all Asian ethnicities together; the one thing that is common regardless of location, culture, language and religious beliefs. generationrice is trying to reach this generation that is looking, or in the process of looking, for an identity. Whether it's "full," "pure," "half-half," "hapa," "mutt," or "mixed," generationrice wants to do its part and bring every group together.

5. What is generationrice made of?

The following sections make up a generationrice issue:

a. Talk - interviews with Asians and Asian Americans from different industries to highlight their work, contributions and accomplishments.

b. My Words - for contributors who want their essays, short stories and poetry, that deal with Asian and Asian American issues, published.

c. My Lens - for contributors who have an interest in photography; a collection of Chinatowns, K-towns and Little Tokyos around the world. Also accepted are photo essays of readers' travels in and around Asia.

d. Reviews - featuring books, music, film and theater about and/or by Asian and Asian Americans.

6. How and what can I contribute?

Contributors were voluntary and unpaid. We are no longer accepting any writing submissions.

7. Can I put up my organization's Asian American events on generationrice?

We are no longer accepting any event announcements.

8. Can I contact some of the people you've featured?

We are not free to give away our interviewees' contact information without their permission. If their information is not listed, e-mail us your letter of intent and it will be forwarded to the responsible parties. Whether they contact you back or not is out of our hands.

9. Has generationrice been recognized and featured anywhere?

generationrice is the recipient of the 2002 Best Web Magazine of the Year at the Philippine Web Awards and a recipient of the Netdiver Design Forte Award.
