14th European Space Mechanisms and Tribology Symposium 2011

Constance, Germany. 28th / 30th September 2011

ESMATS: The European Space Mechanisms and Tribology Symposium

spacer It has taken ESMATS 26 years to cross the Bodensee from Meersburg to Constance and in that time the world may have changed out of all recognition but many of the challenges facing a Mechanisms Design Engineer for this industry remain the same. ESMATS provides an ideal opportunity for Mechanisms Engineers (some of whom may have attended Meersburg in 1985) to come together to discuss and celebrate their sucesses and failures, with a view to pooling their knowledge for the betterment of this unique community.

This bi-annual event held on alternate years in collaboration with its sister event in the USA - The Aerospace Mechanisms Symposium - the European Space Mechanisms and Tribology Symposium, ESMATS, regularly attracts around 200 space mechanism designers and engineers, space scientists and satellite project and programme managers from around the world.

Both ESMATS 2007 in Liverpool, England, and ESMATS 2009 in Vienna, Austria attracted delegates from most of the countries of Europe and across the world; The United States, Japan, China, India, Brazil, Australia and Canada to name but a few.

ESMATS was peviously hosted across the Bodensee in Meerberg in 1985 by Dornier Space Systems, who are now part of Astrium GmbH, the host for ESMATS 2011.

The Symposium will be held in the Steigenberger Inselhotel. Located on a small private island of Constance this former Dominican monastery and later hospital where the airship constructor Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin was born. Situated adjacent to Constance city garden and the harbour, the hotel is linked to the city centre by a short bridge. Constance old town, the municipal park and the harbour are all within easy reach as are boat tours across Lake Constance to the Isle of Mainau.

ESTL Space Tribology Course

spacer
As with previous years ESTL will be holding their Space Tribology Course (STC) at the same location on the 2 days prior to ESMATS. Delegates will be able to book both events through this web site with a single booking when it opens for registration in March 2011.

Space Tribology Course delegates are encouraged to book early to be sure of a place - registrations in previous years have closed early due to being fully booked several weeks prior to the event - and also to assist the organisers in event arrangements.

Participants will learn:
  • Techniques of applied design of tribological components including mechanisms, bearings and gears
  • How to define and apply criteria for the selection of designs
  • How to define and apply criteria for the selection of materials
  • How theories of lubrication affect critical design and manufacturing decisions
  • Qualification test procedures including thermal vacuum testing of mechanisms
The course includes training in:
  • Solid Lubricants including molybdenum disulphide, thin lead films and self lubricating bearing cages
  • Fluid Lubricants including Pennzane and Fomblin Z25
  • Space qualified materials including structural materials, vacuum compatibility and use of heritage data

ESMATS 2011 is being organised by Astrium GmbH and sponsored and supported by:
  • ESA - European Space Agency
  • CNES - Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales and
  • RUAG Space AG
  • SENER Aerospace
  • DLR
  • ESTL
  • Kongsberg
  • MOOG
  • Sierra Nevada Space Systems

The 41st Aerospace Mechanisms Symposium will be held in Pasadena, California, USA in May, 2012. Click following image for more details.
