Summer Day Camp hosted at Scattergood Friends School 

Changing the World in 32 ½ Hours or Less: Leaders at Play and Future World Leaders 

Leaders at Play                       6th – 9th graders                      June 18th – June 22nd
Do you want to make a difference in this world? What type of leader are you? How do you relate to your peers? Find your leadership potential in the fun and  interactive week of Leaders at Play. Join other campers and work together to explore how leaders are made. Practice teambuilding through fun activities, find strength and confidence in your voice, and play the “Culture Game.” Campers spend the morning in workshops, playing games, tying human knots, and celebrating the diversity of the self. In the afternoons, enjoy swimming, arts and crafts, and bonfires with camp songs. Enjoy a field trip climbing at the local climbing wall and end the week of fun self-exploration with the 2012 Leaders at Play Camp Olympics!

Future World Leaders            6th – 9th graders                      June 25th – June 29th
Step into the show of ambassadors from UN member states and debate current issues of the world stage today! Join other campers and make speeches, prepare draft resolutions, negotiate with allies and adversaries, resolve conflicts and learn how to work towards ‘international cooperation’. You may choose to represent any of the five country delegations and then work together with other campers to draft resolutions that are passed by the Future World Leaders summit at the end of the week. This year’s delegations are: China, Sri Lanka, Canada, Argentina, and Russia. In the mornings you will work with your delegation and working group on your resolution. In the afternoon explore the culture of your delegation through food, dance, and art. The week culminates with the final Future World Leaders Summit.

 $225.00 a week, $50.00 for pick up from and to Iowa City.

 Leadership in Young Scholars Institute: Weeks 1 and 2
Summer Residential Camp hosted at Scattergood Friends School in West Branch, IA. $600.00 a week, 10% discount for Scholars who attend both weeks.

 Week 1: Youth Power in 7 days or Less           9th-12th graders          July 15th- July 21st
How do you make a difference and how do you want to make a difference in this world? Scholars learn how to promote a sense of community and explore shared power in decision-making. Practice communicating beyond differences and spend the week exploring the self and teambuilding skills. Unwind with swimming, outdoor games, hiking, and canoeing. Evenings focus on self expression and manifesting who you are in the world through art and music during open studio hours. Each Scholar will be able to enjoy five-ten hours of community service on the Scattergood Organic Farm and eat the Farm’s produce and live stock. At the end of the week scholars will enjoy a graduation celebration and dance. This is week one of a two week residential camp.

Week 2: Changing the World in 7 days or Less       9th-12th graders  July 22nd- July 28th
Week 2 has scholars step into the shoes of a world leader. Scholars will join international scholars as they solve the problems facing the world today through debate, compromise, and consensus. You may choose to represent any of the five country delegations and then work together with other students to draft resolutions that are passed by the Leaders summit at the end of the week. This year’s delegations are: China, Sri Lanka, Canada, Argentina, and Russia. Scholars work on and present country presentations, have fun playing the World Trade Game, explore the culture of the country you represent through dance, food and art, and draft resolutions on world problems. The week ends with the final Leaders Summit a celebration meal and dance party. 

$600.00 a week, $50.00 for pick up from and to Iowa City.

Young Scholars may choose to attend one or both weeks of the Leadership Institute.
Registration for both weeks will include a 10% discount. Limited financial aid available.

Scattergood junior Sophia Walling-Bell was one of 12 finalists from around the nation for Teen's Turning Green's Project Green Challenge.  Read about the Sophia and the Challenge in the Cedar Rapids Gazette.

 

Spring Open Houses

Government Students Release Podcasts

Students in Kevin McCrea’s government have spent the last semester working on podcasts to help better understand the recent inundation of political messages associated with the Republican Primary.   “The educational goal is for students to gain a better understanding of how videos utilize images and sound to create academic arguments.  Images portray information and symbols that carry messages that should be consciously rather than passively consumed.”  To learn more and listen to the podcasts, check out the class blog.

National Small Farm Tradeshow - November 3

Two students, Orianna Riley and Soci Bassak attended the National Small Farm Tradeshow and Conference in Columbia, MO, November 3 -5, with Scattergood Farm Manager Mark Quee.  Mark gave  a presentation on the SARE Grant Scattergood recieved to start a long-term experiment in soil fertility management. "It's pretty cool--Advanced Biology students designed the experiment, I wrote the grant, then the class and I did soil testing, plotting and planting. Sebby and Caleb were involved in weeding, harvesting and data collection this summer. Orianna was instrumental in the classwork; Soci is going to discuss other experiments that she has been a part of through Environmental Science and Farm Project." stated Mark.

Scattergood vs. Olney Soccer - October 29-30 

Scattergood students traveled to Earlham College to visit the school and participate in the yearly soccer game against Olney Friends School. While making new friends was the main goal of the trip, our soccer team was able to tally four goals against their none. The big wicker trophy can be found in our main lobby. The other half of the school stayed behind and kept the school running. Congratulations on a successful weekend for all. 

Scattergood Days - October 22 -23th 

Scattergood Days were attended by many Scattergood friends. It was a great turnout and good times were had by all. It was fun to share our community with the visitors. Thanks for coming.
