While many of our courses involve experiential and project-based learning opportunities, we feel that the benifits students receive from experiencial, hands-on learning are so immense that twice each year we break from our standard academic schedule to provide students an opportunity to explore courses devoted to experiential learning.  These two opportunities are Intercession and May Term.

Intercession:
Intersession is a week-long event in February when academic courses are replaced with non-traditional learning opportunities.  Students chose one course and spend five-full days devoted to the ins and outs of that topic.  Recent Intersession Topics have included:

Judo · Religions Identity · African Dance · French Pastry Making · Astronomy · Belly Dance ·Snow Survival · Blues Guitar · Computer Animation · African Dance · Reading · Electronic Music

In addition to introducing students to new passions and developing new skills, it also provides a time for the community to relax and “hibernate” together in the depths of winter.

May Term:
May Term is our second, more elaborate project-based learning opportunity which lasts the entire month of May and is devoted to solving essential questions through student-directed, hands-on work.  Most students in 11th and 12th grades take part in off campus trips such as the 1200 Mile Bike Ride, in which students and sponsors are dropped off in Mississippi and navigate their way back to campus, or the Latin America trip which involves deepening language skills through language immersion and community service in either Costa Rica or Honduras.

Students who remain on-campus  pursue experiential,  inquiry-based, multi-disciplinary courses that allow students to pose an essential question and work to find the answer.  This year’s May Term offerings include:

The Evolution of Technology for Cooking · Follow the Leader: The Development of Leadership and Teamwork · Politics & Media · Naturalist Training, Journaling and Art · The Poetry and Physics of Flight  · Teatro de Campo - Dramatic Interpretations of Migrant Culture

Scattergood prides itself on our alternative learning directives which afford staff and students alike opportunities to step-out of their comfort-zones and help to stretch our community in new directions.
