Foresight Undergraduate and Earlier Programs - Global List

Below is a starter global list of undergraduate, secondary (high school) and primary (elementary school) programs in foresight. Professional foresight is an interdisciplinary subject that requires scientific, technological, economic, and sociopolitical knowledge and historical understanding. Thus it is most commonly taught formally at the graduate level. But in our accelerating world, the practice of foresight as a life skill cannot start early enough, and FERN wants to see it aggressively expanded at all levels of education.

Imagine a world where foresight practice is taught naturally, from birth, integrated into ourentire educational curriculum. Students do hindsight (history), insight (self knowledge, current affairs, debate) and foresight (structured visioning, trend extrapolation, scenarios, and proposed solutions for world problems) on every topic in their curriculum, all through their primary, secondary, and undergraduate years. That's how we'll create much more empowered, innovative, and future-ready children. Let's make it happen!

1. Undergraduate Foresight Programs
Notable universities with foresight/futures faculty champions and undergraduate foresight centers and courses. There are a few undergraduate degrees in foresight internationally, but none yet in the US. ASF recommends that foresight work at the undergraduate level should 1) be integrated across the undergraduate curriculum and 2) offer standalone foresight courses, but generally not offer degrees. Foresight degrees are best offered at the graduate level.

UNITED STATES
Anne Arundel Community College, Institute for the Future.
Arnold, MD. AACC is the leading U.S. example of what a community college-level futures program can be. They offer in-person and online FS courses, do FS research, maintain a faculty speakers bureau, and have an e-Newsletter. Excellent. Contact: Director, Steve Steele.
Bowling Green State University - Firelands, Initiatives for the Future (IF)

2. Secondary and Primary School Foresight Programs

Future Problem Solving Program International (FPSPI) is the leading global program teaching foresight at the high school level. Anyone who wants to advance early foresight education might find working with them to be a very high-leverage strategy. FPSPI is a 501c3. It's Director is Marianne Solomon. They are based in Melbourne, Florida, USA.

Started in 1974 by creativity expert Dr. E. Paul Torrance and his wife Pansy, FPSPI is an international program involving over 250,000 students from Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, the United States, and other countries.
The program has three divisions: Junior (Grades 4-6), Middle (Grades 7-9), and Senior (Grades 10-12).

They have an annual International Conference, on the campus of a prominent university, where over 2,000 of these students vie for the title of international champion, in team and individual categories, for developing solutions to global problems that are possible or probable in the future.

FPSP students do Problem Solving about Global Issues, Community Problem Solving, and Scenario Writing. Students research and analyze problems in such areas as: Alternative Energy, Artificial Intelligence, Climate Change, Cultural Prejudice, DNA Identification, E-commerce, Environmental Law, Freedom of Speech, Health Care Access, Media, Nanotechnology, Oceanic Species, Sports Medicine, Terrorism & Security, World Communication.

Are you a foresight student, grad, or advocate? Like to help support FPSPI? Here are a few ideas:

  • Become a volunteers or judges at their International Conference
  • Develop new and edit existing curriculum pieces for their program
  • Help them expand to new countries and high schools
  • Develop a FPSPI website for high school students that plugs them into:
    • Great college and career counseling materials,
    • A list of the most foresighted universities they might attend
    • A list of high-impact degrees they might consider
    • A brief introduction to Careers and Graduate Degree Programs in Foresight.

Know other programs that should be on the lists above? Please add them here. Email the wiki moderators, susanchesleyfant{at}gmail{dot}com or johnsmart{at}accelerating{dot}org, with a brief paragraph on your background, and ask for editing access. We are always looking for more foresight students, professionals, grads, and advocates to post here, to work with, and to help the global foresight community.
