GAUCHITO GIL
In Argentina the term Gaucho refers to the working class people of the farms in the Pampa (central meadow).

Gaucho Antonio Gil was an outlaw who lived in the province of Corrientes in the 1860s, he was believed to be a deserter from the military during the war against Paraguay (Guerra de la Triple Alianza). He was caught and murdered by a police sheriff and he didn’t have “Christian burial”, and from there on he was considered miraculous by the people in his province and later in all the country. As you will see in the protographs his believers offer him cigarettes and wine to ask him to provide health and economic welfare. All this people belong to the Catholic Church and are waiting the day Gauchito Gil is proclaimed official saint. But we must know that to be considered a pagan saint he had not had to have a virtuous life, and this may be the key to understand why his believers think him as a saint.
