Evaluating effectiveness of Supervision

“It is vitally important that social work is carried out in a supportive learning environment that actively encourages the continuous development of professional judgement and skills. Regular, high quality, organised supervision is critical”

Lord Laming

“Supervision is an integral element of social work practice not an add-on”

Social Work Task Force

Working in partnership with CPEA, we have worked with a number of local authorities social services to develop an engaging online survey for practitioners and management to evaluate the effectiveness and quality of supervision, and ultimately if it’s helping to benefit service users. It assesses whether the basic arrangements are reliably in place, people have the skills and the knowledge, and importantly whether the outcomes are being achieved. The structure and questions can be readily adapted to match the organisation’s policy and arrangements for supervision, as well as links with its performance management systems.

Please note we can adapt this service and survey to evaluate the effectiveness of other types of supervision, whether this is clinical supervision in the health sector or just general supervision arrangements in the workplace – please also take a look at the service we offer to evaluate the effectiveness of performance appraisal systems using this link

The suite of analysis and reporting enables you to compare people’s experiences in the different parts of the service and roles against the overall norms – this enables you to target the actions that need to be taken, encouraging ownership and accountability by providing reports to each area of the services and their management teams.

With the proposed changes in Ofsted’s approach to inspections being implemented in 2012, placing an increased responsibility on the organisation carrying out internal assessments, this survey provides an efficient and engaging way of being sure that everyone is benefiting from regular, quality supervision; highlighting good practice and identifying the common issues that need to be addressed.

You can download a factsheet on the structure and questions covered in the survey, and the suite of analysis and reporting by using this link
