Groundwater Awareness Week
Celebrate National Ground Water Awareness Week by watching the "Austin Underground" film series and sharing it with your friends. Learn about Geology, Hydrology, Salamanders, Threats/Solutions: Austin Underground Videos
Much of west Austin sits above the environmentally-sensitive Edwards Aquifer which supplies drinking water to more than 50,000 people, feeds countless springs, including Barton Springs, and supplies water to the Colorado River. The City of Austin Watershed Protection Department's Groundwater Team studies the caves, sinkholes and fractures that allow water to pass into the limestone aquifer and reviews development plans to protect recharge features and springs. Staff trace the flow of water underground through dye testing, and monitor and evaluate the water quality of that groundwater as it springs to the surface.
March 17 - Join one of the city's expert geologists on this hike to learn about the Barton Springs segment of the Edwards Aquifer and celebrate Groundwater Awareness Week! This 3 hour guided hike will explore the highs and the lows of Onion Creek, with a focus on the riparian areas and karst features. Onion Creek never fails to amaze people, whether it is running with water or displaying its geology with a dry creek bed.
