Mosby's Confederacy
spacer As John Singleton Mosby, one of the Civil War's most interesting and dynamic leaders, you are charged not with leading vast armies into battle, but with commanding small bands of skirmishers, scouts and guerilla fighters on opportunistic missions to scout, ambush, steal supplies and harass a larger and better armed force of Union soldiers, in this game of turn based strategy and real time tactical combat for the PC.

Missions and their objectives are randomized, so you'll need to approach each game differently, carefully planning your strategy for success. You draw your soldiers from local towns, then through hard won battlefield experience transform them into fighting men scouts, cavalry, rangers and riflemen. Between battles you'll invest in local towns, so they can serve as field hospitals, stables and munitions caches, spacer helping to keep your forces fit and able to fight, and remain confident and supportive of your ongoing efforts, by willingly supplying men to fight for your cause - and as the war rages on this becomes increasingly challenging.

Throughout the campaign your progress is tracked, with a full report of your accomplishments provided at its completion. Can you build a name for yourself, just like Mosby?

Features
  • Turn-based Confederacy Level with unit and resource management
    • Units live in towns that you can influence to support your goals
    • Availability of units for specific missions is dependent on their town's support for you
    • Your interactions with towns, as well as casualties you send home to them, changes the face of the region
  • Real-time tactical combat missions
    • Enemy unit concentrations and mission objectives are randomized for replayability
    • Focus on reconnaissance and stealth tactics
    • Units under your command vary in terms of base stats as well as "attributes" they earn as they level
    • You choose who to take into combat and within a given mission you must work with those units to complete the mission (there are no unit spawning buildings that give you replacements in battle)
  • Randomized units that gain specializations over time with experience
    • Emphasis on each unit as a real soldier rather than traditional RTS expendable, nameless units
    • Each campaign starts with a small group of veteran units mixed in with raw recruits whose homes are chosen at random
    • Though most of the units come into the world as raw recruits, your ability as a leader to cultivate them into effective Rangers, Riflemen, Cavalrymen and Scouts (each of which has his own strengths and weaknesses) will be key to your success

Latest Dispatch
Headquarters Cavalry Brigade, June 20, 1862.

Hon. Geo. W. Randolph, Secretary of War.

General: Permit me to present to you John S. Mosby, who for months past has rendered time and again services of the most important and valuable nature, exposing himself regardless of danger, and, in my estimation, fairly won promotion.

I am anxious that he should get the Captaincy of a Company of Sharpshooters in my brigade, but the muster rolls have not yet been sent in. I commend him to your notice.

Most respectfully, General, Your obedient servant, J. E. B. Stuart, Brigadier General Commanding Cavalry.

As Jeff [Fiske] told me (or more appropriately warned me) at the start of this project, the American Civil War is filled with stories that naturally compel you to just keep digging deeper and deeper into details. This warning rings true as it relates to the tale of John Singleton Mosby and his partisan rangers.

Mosby was very dynamic figure; appreciated and loathed, rash and calculated, often transitioning back and forth from stoic to humorous at a moments notice. His lightning strikes against Union forces moving through the area he called his Confederacy gained him both fame and notoriety depending on whose side of the story you choose to listen to. As such, his story makes for a great game.

From the onset of this project I wanted to capture the intimacy of the combat operations but also the region in which these battles took place. Mosby drew much of his fighting force from local towns willing to contribute to the fight. Because of the partisan nature of Mosbys operations, each soldier mattered, not just as a number with a rifle but as an individual with strengths and weaknesses. Mosby was often outnumbered, often outgunned. What he had on his side was the element of surprise, a keen understanding of the terrain and individuals that mattered in the moment. Simply put, Mosby knew how to be at the right place at the right time, and with just the right forces.

How does all of this translate to a strategy game? Each soldier in Mosby's Confederacy is truly an individual who, based on your ability (as Mosby) to lead, may or may not survive the campaign. Each soldier has the potential to grow under your command and specialize in different tactics. Mosby, too, can change and grow over the campaign as well and in order to maximize your effectiveness youll need to make sure that the towns who supply your troops support your actions. In order to succeed, youll need to be as dynamic as Mosby himself, tactically choosing what key targets to strike as well as the individuals who can get the job done.
