We’re making a difference in our community.

Appropriately placed cigarette butt receptacles have been shown to greatly reduce the number of butts that end up in the environment, thereby reducing the impact to humans, fish and wildlife.

  • Working with local businesses, the VWC’s “The Butt Stops Here!” campaign will place cigarette receptacles at strategic locations in the San Lorenzo Valley.
  • The Butt Stops Here! will also run a media campaign hosting events designed to educate San Lorenzo Valley residents and businesses about the adverse environmental impacts of cigarette butt litter. The Receptacle Contest is the first of these events.
  • A brochure is being designed to provide a quickly read, eye-catching way to warn people about the damage caused by butts dropped on the ground. It will be mailed to every household and PO Box in the San Lorenzo Valley, Bonny Doon and Mt. Hermon (approximately 13,000 addresses).
  • The campaign will be featured at the 25th Annual River & Road Clean-up, to be named in honor of SLV environmental steward, Al Haynes, who died in December, 2010.
  • The number of butts dropped into the new receptacles will be tallied so the impact of the campaign may be measured.
