CMC BROCHURE

The China Media Centre was launched in 2005 at an inaugural event attended by the BBC’s Jeremy Paxman and Sun Yusheng, Deputy President of China Central Television (CCTV). It comprises a team of researchers, led by Professor Hugo de Burgh, with expertise in Chinese media policy; Chinese television, magazine and newspaper journalism; Chinese new media; and cultural change in modern China. In addition to the centre’s six full-time members of staff, there are currently eight visiting research scholars and four full-time doctoral students.

The CMC’s work takes place in four main fields:

Research
Researchers publish on topics which vary from ‘policy and regulation’ to ‘magazine publishing’ to ‘television drama’. There are currently four PhD students and eight visiting scholars from collaborating institutions. CMC is part of Westminster’s Communications And Media Research Institute (CAMRI), judged to be the best in the UK for media and communications in the latest research assessment exercise (RAE).

Knowledge Transfer
The CMC undertakes collaborative projects with the State Council of the People’s Republic of China and the (UK) Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Public Diplomacy Challenge Fund), International Media Support (Danish Government) and from consultancy on British creative industries for the Shanghai Media Group and Hunan Satellite Broadcasting, among others.

Ambassadorship
The CMC regularly organises major events. Notable examples include a 2007 British Parliamentary conference, entitled The China Impact: The Westminster Hearings on China’s Economic Development and the UK. For academic and public events we have cooperated with the BBC, Annenberg School, Queensland University of Technology and other overseas institutions.

Internationalisation
The CMC is a focal point for MA students who come from China yearly to take media courses, as well as visiting lecturers and researchers. There is an MA module The Chinese Media in the New World Order and a new BA Journalism with Chinese/Arabic Language is in hand. The CMC also played a role in setting up the university’s new Indian Media Centre.
