Belinda asked for time to discuss motions to amend the GPOP Bylaws.
1. Coalition for Healthy Families & Workplaces
The Green Party has joined this coalition, which is working for a veto-proof majority in City Council for Earned Sick Leave. We need a volunteer to be our representative at the coalition. They meet on Mondays at 3:00 pm at 1520 Locust Street (7th Floor). Contact
610-543-5022 (x 255) and kscully@pathwayspa.org. Charles and Vivek will be our representatives on a rotating basis. If any additional Greens are interested in working on this project, please contact Chris.
2. Cheri Honkala Discussing Housing Forclosures in Philly
Cheri (Green Party candidate for Sheriff of Phila in 2011) spoke about her work against foreclosures. Cheri has had difficulty finding work since November. She believes that the Philadelphia Political Machine has applied pressure where needed to keep her unemployed.
Despite this, she has become involved in several foreclosure-defense strategies. There have been take-overs of abandoned homes, progress on creating a housing cooperative around Norris Square , and the beginning of World Court Meetings to build an independent political movement.
Cheri would like greater Green Party involvement in her organizing. She asked to have Green General Membership Meetings in Kensington, and we agreed to hold the April 26 meeting there. Cheri asked about founding a Kensington Greens organization, and we agreed to help.

3. Nominations for Green Party City Committee

There are seven members on the Green Party City Committee. Any Green Party member registered to vote in Philadelphia may self-nominate for City Committee membership. Going into the meeting, we had the following nominations:
Chair, Vivek Ananthan;
Treasurer, Belinda Davis;
Membership Secretary, Carol McLean ;
Recording Secretary, Dave Butler; and
At-Large
, Munir Kreidie, Hugh Giordano and Chris Robinson.
During the meeting nominations were accepted for the following, At-Large: John Gonzalez, and Ernest Schulte.
.
4. Election of Green Party City Committee
Voting on the nominations in the following manner: members could vote“Yes” or “No” for the five officers. To be elected, a nominee had to receive a “Yes” from at least 50 percent of those voting. Members could vote for three At-Large seats by ranking their choices“1, 2, 3.” Voting was scored by a rating system.
The four nominated officers each received a“Yes” vote from more than half of the members present. Of the five nominees for the three At-Large seats, Chris Robinson, Hugh Giordano and John Gonzalez received the most votes.
5. Endorsement of Green Party Candidates for Office
Since there were no candidates who have expressed an interest in running for office during 2012. There is still time for people to express interest, and we look forward to supporting Green Party candidates in the November 2012 general election.
There are currently two candidates who would like the Green Party nomination for President of the U.S. : actress Roseanne Barr, www.roseanneforpresident.com, and Dr. Jill Stein, www.jillstein.org. Jill Stein will be in Philadelphia campaigning on Monday, March 19 (see “Announcements” above).
During 2012, GPOP will organize a substantial campaign to collect signatures on candidate nomination papers. We are looking for someone energetic and organized to lead this campaign. If you can help with this, please contact Chris.
6. Election of Delegates to GPPA
Delegates to the State Committee of the Green Party of Pennsylvania meet quarterly at various locations around the state. Philadelphia’s Greens elected the following delegates:
Vivek (incumbent), Dave Houck (incumbent), Chris (incumbent), Carol (incumbent), Hillary (incumbent), Charles (incumbent), Cheri, Thomas “Mohammed” Young and Alex Gillette.
The following members were elected to be alternate delegates to GPPA: Esther (incumbent), Belinda (incumbent), Hugh Giordano (incumbent), Christina, Dave Butler , Bernadette, John Gonzalez, Milan and Ernest.
6. Resolving the Debt Owed to LAVA Zone
Charles urged a resolution of this past debt. Chris pointed out that we already had membership approval for repayment at the July 2011 General Membership Meeting. Chris has contacted Lava Zone about the amount GPOP owes, and we are awaiting their response. This meeting voted to pay $200 from our current account to LAVA Zone and requested the new City Committee to make an arrangement to pay the balance.
7.Amendments to GPOP’s Bylaws
Belinda chaired a subcommittee that looked at changes to the GPOP Bylaws, which must be passed by two consecutive General Membership Meetings.
The subcommittee recommended that the meeting quorum number be reduced from 14 to 10 Green Party members. After discussion, the meeting agreed to lower the number present for a quorum to 8 Green Party members. Following approval by the March General Membership Meeting, the GPOP Bylaws, Paragraph III. General Meeting, Paragraph F, will read:
“The quorum necessary to conduct business shall be eight (8) members.”
The membership further decided to amend the Bylaws by deleting Paragraph IV. City Committee, Paragraph H. 15. Following approval by the March General Membership Meeting, the GPOP Bylaws will no longer include the paragraph which now reads:
The City Committee is not allowed to authorize any contract or closely related group of contracts committing the GPOP to an expenditure greater than 1/10th the value of the treasury without the prior approval of the general membership.”
8.Officer Reports
Belinda reported that the GPOP currently has more than $600.00.
Adjourned
The meeting adjourned at 9:15 pm.

Earned Sick Days in Philadelphia

OpEdNews
February 16, 2012

By Chris Robinson.

www.opednews.com/populum/printer_friendly.php?content=a&id=145588

At Green Night Out on February 4, Eileen Appelbaum of the Center for Economic and Policy Research discussed “Paid Family Leave and Earned Sick Pay: What Activists Should Know.”
_____________________________

Appelbaum explained to the diners, “A surprisingly high two-out-of-five private sector workers, and four-out-of-five low-wage workers, have no paid sick days at all. That’s 210,000 Philadelphians who do not have a single paid sick day, and most workers who do have paid sick days can’t use them to care for a sick child.”
