Fellowship

The Choza Fellowship program is an educational program for students, professionals, scholars, thought leaders, policymakers and other individuals to conduct research and implement projects that promote and contribute to human progress. The Choza offers two categories of Fellowship: Fellowship in Residence and the Fellowship at Large. The Choza Fellowship program accepts rolling applications, and prospective fellows may propose their own projects or may apply to specific Fellowship Solicitations.

Fellowship in Residence

The Choza offers a live/work fellowship onsite at the property in Concepcion, Costa Rica (read more about the property here). This emersion in a small, rural community with other fellows an environment to be inspired and challenged. The change in physical and social of environment and context inspires a shift in perspective, an opening to new insights on what can be deep and meaningful projects to change the world.

It is expected that Fellows will contribute approximately two hours each day to the large project underway at the Choza (seasonally dependent), initiate and complete a small community project (either for permanence at the Choza or surrounding community, preferably something they are an expert in), and spend the majority of their time on their main personal project(s). There is no caretaker at the Choza, so all Fellows must collaboratively harvest food, cook, eat, teach and learn together.

It is important to note that living in the tropics and the jungle is not for everybody. The Fellowship program is for the seasoned adventurer seeking a place to do projects to save the world. This Fellowship program is limited to four people at one time and has a rolling application.

Fellowship at Large

The Choza offers a Fellowship for individuals to conduct research and implement projects that promote and contribute to human progress, regardless of physical location. Fellows may be part-time or full-time on their project and are able to publicly hold themselves accountable to their community for their project, access the Choza network and membership, and utilize the physical location for ‘advances’ and work sessions.

Fellowship Solicitations

Periodically the Choza solicits specific fellowships based on the needs and long-term projects of the Choza Membership. Please visit our specific Fellowship Solicitations openings for more information.

Application Process

Each candidate must apply and outline their proposed project as a Choza Fellow. This process is intended to assist in the acceleration of the project, provide the fellow with intentionality behind their experience and gain support of the Choza Members for the successful outcome of the project. Upon submission of the application, it will be reviewed by a select group of Choza Members, who may also request an interview with the candidate.

Events

Choza Fellows and Members are able to host and coordinate groups and organizations to offer workshops, conference, or other events at the Choza property in Costa Rica. The Choza’s inspiring setting encourages innovation and challenges routine perspectives. The natural landscape and communication in rural Costa Rica is intoxicating and enriching. Groups are able to make full use of the Choza facilities and land during the day to support their events whilst also benefiting from interaction with the Fellows and the local community. As community is at the heart of what the Choza workspace offers, a public presentation or other event is encouraged as part of any group activity on site. Groups are also encouraged to engage and support physical work at the Choza such as working on the farm for a day. Group events can be self hosted or hosted by the Choza, on request.
