OBESE RECORDS PRESENTS THE
UPRISING – 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY EDITION;
2012’S ‘OBESECITY 2’ COMPETITION
“Giving the next generation
of budding emcees a chance to be part of a
monumental release.” Obese Records stands
as the first and longest running Aussie hip
hop label in the country. Its integrity is
maintained by its consistency to provide opportunities
to the next generation of aspiring artists.
In 2002 the genre was benchmarked by the release
of Obesecity. The compilation channeled the
strength and unity of a developing sub-culture.
A mass collaboration, the release included
exclusive tracks from artists now revered
as the most influential pioneers in a booming
industry. Pegz, Hilltop Hoods, Koolism, Reason,
Terra Firma, the late and great Hunter all
contributed from across the country uniting
crews and their fans. Since then Australian
hip hop has come a long way. 2012 sees it
as highly diverse, easily accessible, constantly
evolving, always moving forward. In the same
fashion Culture of Kings broke the mold in
2000 and Obesecity guided the way in 2002,
Obesecity 2: 10 Year Anniversary Edition (release
date June/July 2012), will showcase established
and up and coming breakthrough artists handpicked
from across the country. For all involved
the dual-disc compilation will provide a unique
opportunity to share in the bigger picture,
to be part of the collective by sharing skills
with a reputable media network and a hungry
fan base. This time around Obese Records is
proud to announce that two track positions
will be left open to the general public. Up-and-coming
unsigned hip hop artists Australia wide are
encouraged to take part in this inaugural
project by submitting their own individual
track exclusive to the release.

Jess Harlen - Park Yard Slang
Record Label: Plethora Records
Release Date: 30.03.2012
Park Yard Slang is the soul-baring sophomore
opus from exquisite Melbourne songstress Jess
Harlen. True to the quality displayed throughout
debut album Neon Heartache (2010), Harlen
proves herself once more as a delectable vocalist
and relatable song-writer, mastering her own
style with cathartic conviction. Joined again
by the Mercury Prize-winning producer Plutonic
Lab, Park Yard Slang maintains sonic consistency
throughout.
Tornts - Concrete Slang
Record Label: Broken Tooth Entertainment
Release Date: 16.03.2012
From the depths of Melbourne, the highly respected
rapper and venomous author, Tornts, is back
with his highly anticipated LP, “Concrete
Slang”. Broken Tooth Entertainment’s
most prolific MC returns with a hard hitting
dose of reality rap and image riddled visions
of city life in 2012. Stark and confronting,
and always pushing boundaries, he has refined
and honed his style of story telling narratives
and rebellious social commentary to a new
level.
Tornts has garnered the reputation as a unique
voice for the growing under-class of our sprawling
cities and those who are downtrodden and frustrated
with their place in society, and that voice
is one that is truly to be reckoned with.
Moneykat - Moneykat
Record Label: Moneykat
R elease Date: 09.03.2012
MoneyKat is a full blooded album- political,
personal and poetic. The debut album from
international duo MoneyKat, comprising Omar
Musa from Australia and Mighty Joe from California,
it spans a diverse range of musical styles
and ideas. With production from New Zealand's
Fire and Ice (Scribe, David Dallas), Australian
producer Ishu, Mercury prize winning producer
Lotek (Roots Manuva, Speech Debelle), Californian
producer Count and US rock veteran Geoff Stanfield
(Black Lab, Sun Kil Moon), this is an international
album with rich sonic texture. The palate
of sounds ranges from reggae ("Nothing
is Safe") to classic soul-sampled hip
hop ("Each Footstep", "Ordinary
People") to minimalist, grime tinged
bangers ("Power is Violence"). Added
to that are guest appearances by Australian
MC Mantra, soul singer Candice Monique and
Californian MC Senbei. With themes ranging
from love to migration to materialism, MoneyKat
tries to capture the light and shade of everyday
life. Recorded over a year in Seattle, California
and Melbourne, MoneyKat is a labour of love
and the duo are confident they bring something
fresh but universal to Australian hip hop.
