On a Wednesday at Argonne we were sent to a room where there was mini sculptures of iconic monuments, it was made by 3D Printing. With 3D printing you are able to create 3D objects layer by layer with liquid. On a computer you design the object layer by layer, is process taked days. Its like when you do one thing you have to do the next thing right then in there (at the same time) to create...
In Science Club today, we celebrated the spring weather by going outside and writing poems about what we saw, heard and touched. Here are some of the poems we wrote:
Nature's Life
By: Andrea
The tress in the ground
The roots all around.
The light blue sky in my eyes
The smell of fresh rain drops
The smell of the breeze blowing on me.

Today we did an experiment where we took an empty water bottle and added vinegar in the bottom. Then we took a balloon and added baking soda to the balloon. When we put the balloon on the top of the water bottle and the baking soda fell into the vinegar, it created a reaction. It made the balloon fill up with air!

this is the first meeting after the competition we had come in third place out of a possible 5 places. Our next assignment is to build rockets and launch them.
needless to say we need financial support for the rockets. but we have a couple leads
Sorry for not blogging recently. Yesterday we had a competition for the underwater robot. We got 57 points in total out of a possible 120 points. This is quite an accomplishment considering we did not have much time to test the robot. We only finished the robot three days ago. And we tested it Thursday and Friday in the pool. So when it came to started the competition we were a little bit...
Hello my science buddy's my name is M.O. I am in 8th grade and this was my first year to be in the science fist. I had so much fun at our first competition with my peers, even though we did not come in first or second place we still tried our best and i'm very proud of my peers. I would like to thank my teacher and our helpers that help us built our equipment and for the things they have...
Hi my name is Angel. I competed in Compute This. In the competition, it was hard finding the data my partner and me needed. I tell you, my partner almost didn't help at all. I don't mean to be mean but it's true. He was only joking around. I was a little too but not as much. It's better to know what to do you alone when the others don't. When we found at least something, I started to create a...
Hello Reader,
I'am E.J and I participated in Science Olympiad this year (2012) and i felt that it was a lot or work and a lot of work as also. But it was fun because i learned something new and also because it was our first time going to science Olympiad but we did see that the children where happy and having fun at all times.
Hi my name is Johuan Hernandez. My experience in Science Olympiad was fun and educational. I learned to build a tower and build a bottle rocket with a two litter bottle. Next year I hope im in Bottle Rockets and Storm the Castle. This year we didn't have Storm the Castle because we had the wrong materials for it.
Hi my name is Juan Trejo. For next year I am going to do the same events (write it do it and bottle rockets). I would like to join the same thing because I want to improve more in my events and also it was really fun in write it do it and bottle rockets. I was also going to do storm the castle because I was actually going to join for storm the castle but we had some errors in the launcher....
Hi I'm a Little Village Academy student I had a great experience in Science Olympiad and well I just wanted to say that overall I had a great time at competition. I was participating in reach for the Stars and keep the heat I am totally joining this program again next year 'cause it is a great program. I hope i do good in all the same place :)
i can't wait for next year to get on this program again and i already know what i can do to make the things better for next year like the mistakes i made now i can fix them . i also had so much fun in the competition even if i lost i still had fun. i participated in keep the heat and reach for the stars.for next year i would like to participate on keep the heat and rockets because that is...
what i did int like was road scholar. and wht i want to do next year is towers optics wz ok bt stll diffcult. i would also like to got next year.
Tips for next Year:
Hello viewers I'm Esther Jimenez and I participated on Science Olympiad this year {2012}. When I prepared for competition for optics and anatomy I felt that its was a lot of work and that it was a lot to learn. When we got to competition my partner Marlen for optics was so excited but when we got our papers to tell us the time
road scholar- always bring a partner. never come alone because you will need some help.i felt kinda scared because i saw everyone have a partner but me. an i felt weird learn how to read a map.
optics- you need to learn all the vocabulary. also be prepare all the types of pictures that they point at.and practice
Hi my name is Juan Trejo. I am from Little Village Academy. I participated in the Science Olympiad competition. I worked on write it do it and i did not do so good as I wanted to. What i could have done is practice more with my partner to prepare for the actual test. I only practice one time and that was before the day of the competition. I could have been practicing with my partner since i...
Tips for Keep the Heat:
- Measure the box RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- study more the thermodynamics theory
- put the thermometer on the right place
- And Again STUDY STUDY STUDY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tips for Reach for the stars:
- Study A lot and i mean a lot
- we took a flashlight but i wonder why did we ever need it...
hi my name is Janette i was in keep the heat what i would of do to make things better is measure the box and study more about thermodynamics and also put the thermometer in the right place. I also was in reach for the stars what i would of do to make things better is study more the stars they required a flashlight but we didn't used it so why did we take it . I feel nervous when we got there...
For mousetrap tips I could have are strong glue or strap to hold the mousetrap and good mousetrap trap so it has stronger force and glue so it wont snap of and brakes. Perhaps a certain amount of string so it will go the right distance and so if rules change also to go backwards and stop. It takes cooperation and support to accomplish parts of the mousetrap and if i didn't have help from my...
Today in science club, we learned about oil and water. Did you know they don't mix? It is because water is polar and oil is non-polar. We started to by pouring water in a water bottle. When we added the oil it separated to the top. Then we put food coloring in the water to change the color. I picked peach. Last, we put Alka-seltzer in the water and it started to bubble the oil which...

Students at Ruben Salazar had a blast during their scienceFIST club yesterday afternoon. All students were asked to design and build a carton that could keep an egg from breaking when dropped. Typical of something involving any kind of friendly competition, all the students were very eager to find out which teams had created successful designs, and which teams ended up with smashed eggs on the...
It has been quiet a week for students and teachers at The scienceFIST Foundation. This past Monday Program Manager Kate was on hand at Ruben Salazar for a visit to their Dyson Engineering and Design Club. Site director Samantha Ashbaker held student made building models and asked them what they could do to make them better. Through this line of questioning they discussed why they made certain...

Thanks so much Ms. Nelson for helping with the lunar landing activity and also contributing supplies and some nice prizes!
Yesterday a group of elementary students put on their engineering hats and constructed roller coasters out of foam tubing. Students were given a marble and told their marbles had to travel down a hill through a loop to land in a coffee can. Time flew by as students schemed, constructed and tested out their coasters. There were many frustrating failures and ela
