Mountain Climbing and Wilderness Trails at Amateur-Hikers.com

Amateur hikers and backpackers. We're all over the place, and we'll hike anything we think is within our capability, and sometimes we'll even hike things that we think might be beyond our capability. Why? Because it's there. Because we love standing at the top of a mountain, and seeing amazing views that we'll never forget. Because we love sharing special moments with friends and family.

Because we love the excitement of seeing some piece of wilderness...whether animal, plant, or mineral...that we've never seen before. Because we love that feeling we get when we get our second wind, and start to feel like we could keep going forever. Because we hate the feeling we get when we realize we can't keep going forever but we're just too stubborn to accept that fact.

So we pick up our atlas and gazetteer and we read about the hikes in our area, or we go searching online for good mountains or coastlines to hike, and when we've picked our target we gather some close friends who want to conquer that peak or see that view along with us, and off we go!

And somewhere along the line we find ourselves thinking, I wish I could find a decent review of this mountain hike, or this wilderness trail, so I'd know exactly what I'm getting myself into. But alas, the gazeteers, atlases and hiking websites give only a minimal description - a short paragraph, or a page with a short review that doesn't answer our questions.

What kinds of questions does the amateur hiker want answers to? We don't necessarily want to know the same things the professional hikers want to know. We want to know...

  • Would it be unwise to bring my children, grandchildren, or other young hikers on this trip?
  • How many hours will it take me to hike up? What about the hike back down?
  • What interesting things will I see along the way?
  • How many miles of hiking is this trail, and what is my elevation gain going to be by the time I get to the top?
  • Is the trail really steep? And if it is really steep, does it stay steep for a very long time, or is it just short steep sections all along the trail?
  • How exactly am I going to find this trail, anyway? Give me route numbers and landmarks, so I'll be sure not to miss it.
  • Do I have to be in really good shape to attempt this trail?
These questions and many more will be answered in the hike reports on this site. And if you don't find information on your favorite hiking location, you can help build the site by adding your own hike report.
