STAND is working to educate, empower, and organize the community to demand smoke-free housing to reduce the exposure to secondhand smoke in shared housing situations. STAND encourages apartment communities to implement smoke-free policies as a way to protect their current and future residents and staff from the dangers of secondhand smoke.
Every year 53,000 nonsmokers in the U.S. die from the effects of secondhand smoke. In California, it kills more than 4,700 nonsmokers each year. Secondhand smoke exposure can cause lung disease, heart disease, and cancer.*
