SHEDL - Scottish Higher Education Digital Library

News

January 2012. The SHEDL Steering Group is pleased to publish a statement on the Policy for Institutions Joining, Merging, Demerging and Leaving the Consortium. The statement has the agreement of the SCURL members and also JISC Collections who negotiate on behalf of SHEDL.

July 2011. SCURL was proud to receive a Scottish Library Excellence award for Shared Services in the Higher Education sector with the innovative development of SHEDL. The award was presented to Sheila Cannell, on behalf of SCURL and SHEDL, at an event in the Scottish Parliament in January 2011 by Christine May, Chair of the Scottish Library and Information Council, and also MSP Peter Peacock.

"The SHEDL concept is something new for the UK library community. From 2009 all higher education institutions in Scotland have access to the current journal content of initially three publishers, the American Chemical Society, Cambridge University Press, and Springer and from 2010 current journal content to Berg, Edinburgh University Press, and Oxford University Press. In 2011 content has been made available from Intellect and also Project Muse. SHEDL has also signed up to Portico - A Digital Preservation and Electronic Archiving Service to ensure continued access to our shared assets for the future.

With the strong negotiating support and involvement of JISC Collections, SCURL (the Scottish Confederation of University and Research Libraries) plans to extend this concept further. This session will explore the implications for research and teaching in Scotland, and for library funding within Scotland and potentially elsewhere in the UK; and consider the opportunities for both publishers and user communities offered by this type of universal access."
