Finding a car that is fun to drive and affordable to own can be challenging. Fortunately, there are a number of used cars on the market that typically list for under $5,000 and can provide all the thrills and driving excitement you crave with minimal upfront investment and, in some cases, above-average reliability. Here are ten of our favorite cars in terms of performance, value and enjoyment behind the wheel.
Nissan 240SX
• Available from 1989 to 1997, the Nissan 240SX S13 and S14 featured aggressive exterior styling and pure fun behind the wheel. Nissan 240SX models manufactured after 1991 feature a slightly more powerful engine that can deliver a bit more bang for your buck, but any car in the Nissan 240SX lineup is a great high performance choice.
BMW E30 325i
• The upgraded BMW E30 325i made its official debut in 1987 and had a four-year run at the top of the performance charts. Its boxy exterior is in sharp contrast to the roaring acceleration this vehicle delivers as soon as you step on the gas. For BMW lovers, this inexpensive performance car is still one of the best buys out there.
BMW E36 325
• On the same theme, the BMW E36 325 and 328 performance vehicles were available from 1992 to 1999. These classic performance vehicles feature a sleeker, more streamlined exterior with the same high-octane attitude. In some cases, the M3 coupes are available at the same low price, so you might be able to snag a true high performance legend for under $5,000.
Volkswagen MK3 GTI
• Volkswagen is responsible for some of the most memorable vehicle designs in automotive history, and from 1995 through 1999, the MK3 GTI with VR6 engine was definitely a showstopper. Quick on the roads and easy on the wallet, the Volkswagen MK3 GTI is still worth the money, especially for models that feature the rare antilock braking system that was an option on these peppy performers.
Volkswagen MK4 GTI
• Volkswagen’s follow-up to the MK3 GTI is equally impressive. From 1999 until 2003, the MK4 GTI was available with the same outstanding VR6 engine and the same sporty attitude as its predecessor and is well worth the cost of admission based on its acceleration and handling alone.
Acura Integra GSR
• The DC2 model Acura Integra GSR manufactured from 1994 to 2001 is arguably one of the sleekest, most beautiful front-wheel drive vehicles ever made, a real work of art. The Acura Integra is equally impressive under the hood with its exceptional VTEC engine. Easy to work on and fun to drive, the Integra GSR is a definite must-see in the under $5,000 automotive market.
Audi B5
• You may hear some arguments about the relative merits of the Audi B5 and S4 manufactured between 1996 and 2011. Some car experts will tout the superior power and performance of the S4 models, but the B5 is a fantastic choice for the money. You’ll see fewer problems, enjoy a smoother ride and an amazing car by opting for the A4 over the higher performance S4 vehicles.
Audi C4 S4
• From 1992 to 1994, Audi produced the C4 S4, a five-seater with definite performance car attitude and style. You may also see this four-door saloon advertised as the Audi Ur-S4 in recognition of its German heritage. Under any of its designations, however, this classic vehicle is a high performance tuner car and can easily produce over 300 horsepower for motivated drivers.
Mercedes C36 AMG
• Mercedes-Benz’s AMG division was responsible for creating some of the greatest performance cars of all time as evidenced by the 1995-1996 AMG limited edition C36. This classic of European engineering is fairly rare, but can be found under $5,000 and is well worth the money due to the limited number of vehicles on the market and the exceptional racing heritage of this high performance vehicle. It’s an AMG; need we say more?
Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX
• Chrysler released two versions of the same vehicle under different names during the early 1990′s. The Eagle Talon TSi and the Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX both featured all-wheel drive and a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine. While these vehicles are usually priced under $5,000 and can produce exceptional performance, buyers may want to steer clear due to the likelihood of breakdowns in these high-maintenance high-performance vehicles.
Any of these cars can be an outstanding investment in driving excitement and sheer fun, depending on what you’re looking for in your weekend project car. Be sure to use genuine OEM replacement parts and accessories to ensure that your classic car continues to perform beautifully for years to come.
