Band of the week - This week

Walls
Label Profile
This isn't your typical hardcore/d-beat. It can be harsh and dissonant, but not in the same way you'll hear in most other places. There is space to move around in it, the guitars don't suffocate you. The rage and paranoia is intoxicated by sipping on the kind of caustic broth served up by Oxbow and The Jesus Lizard.   Featuring Jensen Ward of powerviolence duo Iron Lung, Walls released their self-titled debut in 2007. Latest album 'The Future is Wide Open' convulses with self-flagellating anger, but there's an honesty to the acidic screams and sickened tirades of vocalist August Alston which makes the album easy to connect with.   The musicianship is really...

Boxbeat Robot
Facebook
Boxbeat Robot manages to cover pretty much every piece of ground explored by electronica without nailing his colours to the mast. If you can name it, he’s probably done it as well as most others can (often better), whilst adding an boundless flair for experimentation: on the track 'You Never Really Fell In Love, (No-One Ever Really Does...

Cosmonauts Day
Bandcamp
I found this unique take on instrumental post-metal/sludge from Russian stargazers Cosmonauts Day really refreshing. There's nothing really sludgy about them at all: most of the guitar is in a higher register than you might expect, whether it's delivering skyscraping post-rock duelling, shoegaze clouds or speed metal shredding.  ...

Raven
Official Site
Djordje Miladinovic is Raven, the militant noisenik from Čačak, Serbia. He also fronts hardcore punk band Democratic Terror, but this is all about harsh drones and soul-purging turbulence.   It's very often the aural equivalent of a bunker buster detonating in your back yard, but this is not mere chaos; for all the pulverising force,...

Baby Godzilla
Bandcamp
My attitude towards Baby Godzilla's new album (more of an EEP really) has been as unpredictable as the group themselves. On first listen, I was immediately gobsmacked by this adrenaline shot lucky dip of noise riffs, stoner country, screamo, proggy grindcore, and straight-up rock 'n' roll: “Wow! Did you hear that? That bit's...

William Delray
Bandcamp
A Toronto-based band acting as the alter ego of Matt Miller, who makes writing great songs look ridiculously easy, like he knocks them out while pouring cereal or watering plants. The tunes on 'Natural Thoughts' are more like lo-fi vignettes that follow the dictum of 'always leave the audience wanting more', lasting between one and...

Alex Kozobolis
Bandcamp
This week has been pretty shit if I’m honest, grim weather, skint and to top it off I’m currently nursing two cracked ribs. I can’t seem to get myself into a comfortable position that doesn’t either hurt my ribs or make me look like someone who is waiting to…you know… receive.  So despite all things big...

Tacoma Narrows Bridge Disaster
Bandcamp
The collapsed remains of the original Tacoma Narrows Bridge are now an artificial reef. Perhaps, lying somewhere among the concrete and barnacles are the remains of the only fatality of the disaster: Tubby the dog. TNBD have all the post-metal tools to soundtrack those images of derelict beauty.   We launch off with the instrumental '...

Orcus Chylde
BandPage
I decided to go out on a limb based on just two rough-and-ready streams from this Bavarian six-piece on my shitty laptop speakers. Switching to a decent set only affirmed my conviction. They proudly describe themselves as 70's psych/prog rock. Perhaps accidentally, there is a lot more going on than you might immediately imagine from that tag....

White Swallow
Bandcamp
Not the 80's aftershave or the porn search criteria. White Swallow the rock duo deal in melodic stomp and barbarian amp destruction with more hooks than a velcro front door. The verses are tuneful and droll, the choruses stomp on the pedal and erupt. These things will never stop being fun.   Latest single 'Belong Song' sees them...
