Defined simply, orthopedic implants are used to replace damaged or troubled joints. The surgical process for orthopedic implants involves the removing of damaged joints and replacing it with an artificial prosthesis. The most common cause for orthopedic implants is worn down cartilage. Medical terms a doctor may use for worn down cartilage are osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease. One advantage to orthopedic implants is a reduction in the discomfort you experience from the worn down cartilage. Another advantage of orthopedic implant surgery is an increase in mobility. Orthopedic implants do have disadvantages as well. Just like any surgery, there is a possibility of infection and post-surgery pain to tolerate. For those considering orthopedic implants, the advantages often outweigh the disadvantages. There are many types of orthopedic implants including hips, knees, shoulders and elbows. Orthopedic implants are often custom made by companies such as Autocam Medical and can be made from different types of materials. The most common orthopedic implants are metal-on-metal or metal-poly-metal. Autocam Medical began by creating hip, shoulder and joint implants. They have recently expanded into creating trauma implants for ankles, wrists, hands and feet. Some surgical procedures for orthopedic implants require more than just the implant itself. Hip implants are often accompanied by bone screws and joint implants normally require bone plates to be used during surgery. Orthopedic implants are a complex procedure. The creation of custom implants, bone screws and bone plates has to take place before the surgery and after the surgery, there is often post-surgery rehab. Although orthopedic implant surgery is complex, many who have had the surgery believe it was worth it.
