spacer The Texas Center for Defense of Life (TCDL) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (tax status pending) incorporated on January 22, 2011, the 38th Anniversary of the Roe v. Wade U.S. Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion.  We are dedicated to providing legal representation and support to pro-life organizations and individuals in Texas, and to aggressively defending the sanctity of innocent human life in Texas and federal courts from conception through natural death.  TCDL is closely affiliated with the Alliance Defense Fund (ADF) which is located in Scottsdale, Arizona, and remains the nation’s largest Christian legal organization established to protect and preserve religious liberty, the sanctity of life, marriage, and the family.

Gregory R. Terra, Esq.
President & CEO

Mr. Terra serves as the President and CEO of the Texas Center for Defense of Life. Before attending law school Mr. Terra attended the University of Oklahoma on a three-year Army ROTC scholarship where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and was commissioned as a U.S. Army officer. He then served in Virginia, Korea, Hawaii, Missouri, and Texas as a Platoon Leader, Executive Officer, and Assistant Operations Officer, earning the rank of Captain.

In 1993, after leaving active-duty, he moved to College Station, Texas to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree in political science from Texas A&M University. Mr. Terra and his new wife then moved to Virginia Beach where he attended law school at Regent University School of Law and earned his law degree and a Master of Arts in Political Management.

After law school, Mr. Terra served as an Assistant County Attorney in Williamson County where he prosecuted for about two years. In 2005, he left to form his own law practice in Georgetown, Texas. Mr. Terra lives in Round Rock with his wife and two daughters, and is active in his community. He has supported the Texas Alliance for Life and currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Hope Connections Pregnancy Resource Center. He and his family live in Round Rock, Texas.

Stephen D. Casey, Esq.
Vice President & Chief Counsel

Mr. Casey serves as Vice President and Chief Counsel for the Texas Center for Defense of Life. Mr. Casey supervised operation of nuclear reactors in the United States Navy for eight years, holding several leadership and supervisory positions. In 1999, Mr. Casey finished his naval service and attended LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas, where he double-majored in Biblical Studies and History-Political Science. Mr. Casey continued his education at Regent University School of Divinity, earning a Master of Arts in Biblical Interpretation. Subsequently, he attended Regent University School of Law, where he was served as an editor for Regent’s Law Review, was active with the Federalist Society, and participated in moot courts.

Mr. Casey began his work in pro-life law while at Regent, interning with the Alliance Defense Fund. After school he clerked with several firms and was selected to clerk with the Texas Supreme Court. Mr. Casey now operates a solo legal practice in Central Texas, and after meeting Mr. Terra and working with him to obtain a restraining order on behalf of a young girl being forced into an abortion, was inspired to join together to form the Texas Center for Defense of Life.

Mr. Casey lives in Round Rock with his wife and five children, where they are active in the community. He also is active in local politics, running for state representative in 2009 and volunteering his time with the Republican Party state and county committees.

Susie Lain
Legal Assistant

Ms. Lain works as Mr. Terra’s legal assistant in his private practice, and has been with the practice for over three years, after attending the University of Idaho. Ms. Lain and her husband recently welcomed a new member of their family, Max, who was born in August of last year.

Thomas Umstattd
Webmaster

Thomas Umstattd Jr. serves as the webmaster and an advisor for the Texas Center for Defense of Life. Mr. Umstattd attended the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor to study management, and now is the CEO of Umstattd Media, which works to help authors and businesses, like the Texas Center for Defense of Life, to get the most out of the web. Mr. Umstattd himself is also a speaker and writer, deeply committed to his faith, and lives in central Texas.
