Club 10s – Help needed

As mentioned on the forum club members are needed to help put out signs on the course of the Club 10 time trials. Volunteers are needed as without the signs, the event cannot be run. This is an opportunity to put something back in to the running of the club. You need access to a car as the signs are too large to carry on a bike, full instructions will be provided. The dates are: Wed 2nd May Wed 16th May Wed 30th May Wed 13th June Wed 11th July Wed 25th July Wed 8th August Sat 18th August Some of the slots have already been taken by kind volunteers but if you plan to ride regularly then consider helping. Just add your name on the forum.

Thanks from the NSPCC

The club has had a “reverse sponsorship” deal with the NSPCC charity which ended in 2011. Space on the kit and website was offered and members could elect to donate £5 from the annual membership fee to the charity. As well as publicity and awareness the club raised a total of £2955 for the charity and they’ve written to club treasurer Will Meers to express their thanks. You can download a copy of the letter here.

Club 10 series

The club organises several 10 mile time trials in conjunction with neighbours the Kingston Phoenix RC. Club 10s are a very informal affair, so if you haven’t done a TT before this is an excellent opportunity to start. If you are interested in riding, please add your name to the list on the forum that is started ahead of the event. In the unlikely event of it being oversubscribed, priority goes to (i) first claim club members who have marshalled or helped out in Club activities then, KW members who have yet to help and finally others. The cost this year will rise to £3 payable on the evening. This is because of a rise to £2 for the levy the club has to pay to the governing body of time trialling for each rider who races. The start sheet will be posted on the forum a couple of days beforehand, after that turn up at the car park used as a HQ, pay £3, grab a number from the pile in the back of our car and off you go. Wed 18 Apr Club 10 Wed 2 May Club 10 Wed 16 May Club 10 Wed 30 May Club 10 – 2 Up TT Wed 13 Jun Club 10 Wed 11 Jul Club 10 Wed 25 Jul Club 10 Wed 8 Aug Club 10 Sat 18 Aug Club 10 2 up means riders set off as a pair. It’s fun to work together, being able to draft another rider should mean a faster time if you get the pace right. Course is the G10/42, details of which can be found here.

2012 Club Kit

The shipment of the club’s new kit has arrived from Italy. It will be available to members from Monday 2 April via kitmaster Keith Griffin. Bibshorts, short sleeve jerseys and gilets have arrived. For now the exact prices have yet to be determined, but will be similar to the previous items. Note the club makes virtually no profit on the gear, we just round up or down the numbers to make it easier to handle the money. For further information see the forum and the club kit page. The latter will be updated with pricing and size details in due course.

CTC Cheam and Morden Hilly 50K

Details of a local ride, it is 50km but you might wish to make it longer by riding out to the start and finish. 10.00 am Saturday 10 March 2012. Vertiginous ascents and precipitous descents – none of which makes sense but people do it every year. Defy reason and take part in the ride known as ‘The Most Ridiculous of all the Classics’.  Elite riders finish in a tad under two hours; tourists can take three and a half hours or more. For anyone unfamiliar with the North Downs, there are six hills – one of which rates a single chevron, and another garners two. See those folk walking….. And you only have to ride up Box Hill once! The literati amongst you will know two hills appear in “100 Greatest Cycling Climbs”. For further information use links on the C&M page of our website www.cyclingswlondon.org.uk. There’s a route sheet, GPS files for those with toys, and a StreetView map for those content to ride the course from the comfort of their armchair or with a limited sense of direction! Payment (£3) is on the day but you can save £1 by pre-registering either using the website or emailing ctc.cheammorden@virgin.net. Free e-certificate for all those daft enough to want one.

Sporting 14 cancelled

The Gil Jessop Memorial Sporting 14 on 12th February had to be abandoned just before the start as light rain fell on sections of the course and the possibility of ice on the course arose. Many thanks to the timekeepers (Frank Cubis and Peter Delve), the marshals and supporters who turned out to ensure a safe event – all the caterers and for all the riders who travelled out to support us. Under the rules of the CTT we will return your entry fees: Cheques will be shredded by the organisers and Paypal payments reversed. Second Sunday in February 2013. See you there.
