Boundary unlocks the intelligence needed to manage these applications by offering lightning fast analysis on an ultra-fine resolution of data. To achieve this speed and resolution of data, Boundary employs software meters, installed on your application servers, that examine the header information of every packet and securely stream it to the Boundary service once a second.

Analytics

Boundary applies analytics to data in real time through the use of queries submitted to its streaming engine. You can apply standard ‘out of the box’ queries and/or augment them with additional queries created by simply selecting different views of the data through the Boundary user interface.

Standard analytics include items such as top talkers by IP address, top talkers by traffic type and top talkers by country. Boundary makes it easy to combine queries to answer questions such as “show me which hosts are generating ZooKeeper traffic” or “show me which traffic types are being generated by my Riak cluster.”

Alerting

Alerts are very easy to define within the Boundary product, and can be sent direct to email, escalated to third party services such as PagerDuty, or can trigger automated actions via Webhooks. Alerts can also be correlated with network changes in the Boundary dashboard.

Alerts can easily be set to trigger on specific times of day or days of week, as well as being able to be triggered from individual meters, groups of meters or flow profiles.

Tier-to-Tier Application Views

Each Boundary meter can be tagged either manually or automatically from provisioning or automation tools such as Puppet or Chef. Tags are an important concept in Boundary because they can be used to consolidate individual meters into groups, for example application tiers or clusters. As new server instances are deployed or existing server instances torn down, Boundary automatically assigns them into groups.

Queries can easily be created to monitor traffic flows between all of your application tiers—for example between a Hadoop cluster and a Cassandra cluster, and also within the tier itself, for example within a Cassandra cluster.

Seamless DevOps Integration and APIs

Boundary integrates with many other DevOps tools including such common solutions as Jenkins, Puppet and Chef to create an integrated DevOps tool-chain. Automatically annotate your dashboards with each deployment to correlate deployments with degradations. Integrate meter deployment with your existing Chef cookbooks and Puppet recipes. Easily extend Boundary’s dashboards with API-based access to customize and integrate our real-time data and analytics into your own dashboards and reports.
