The idea of the proposal for the PORTA project (PORTs as a gateway for Access inner regions) came from the University of Catania and was developed in collaboration with FEPORTS, project’s lead partner, and Port Authority of Catania.
The PORTA project, which is joining partners from five Mediterranean countries (Spain, Italy, France, Greece and Slovenia) aims to define and implement common strategies and integrated transport/land use planning procedures to increase the role of ports as strategic key actors of the maritime and logistics development and as a gateway to access the inner regions.
The project was selected by the Selection Committee at the 2nd Call of the Programme MED and is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund.
PORTA has started on the 1st of June 2010 and will be implemented till the 30th of May 2013.
The partnership will apply a new system of guidelines for integrating transport regional planning and port management in order to overcome the dichotomy between maritime and transport policies and urban/local sustainable development of the areas surrounding the ports.
