2008 – LIVE EVEL EP

spacer

Produced in the lead-up to “THE FAILURE” LP, this limited run of 1,000 EPs was produced to give record stores and fans something to get excited about ahead of the full album release.

Evel Knievel died in 2007, on the last day of “THE INTERNATIONAL SITUATION” tour w/ Buck 65 and B. Dolan.  Dolan had been premiering “The Failure” material and performing “The Skycycle Blues” nightly on that tour, and the eerie synchronicity was enough to spawn this tribute piece.

Songs like “Heart Failure,” “Joan of Arcadia,” and “Crow on the Riddle” appear for the first time here, with extended intros and outtros featuring clips of Evel Knievel speaking on the subjects of life, religion, and revenge.  “Love Will Survive” also appears here with it’s original ending, which was edited off the final “Failure” LP.

The back of this sleeve contains an extended explanation by B. Dolan about the history of his strange connection to Evel Knievel and is beautifully designed, but the single highest testament to the quality of this record might be it’s inclusion in the Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame!

2008 – The Failure

The opus that started it all.  Conceived and produced over a period of 8 years, “The Failure” has been described by critics alternately as a ‘fascinating objet d’art,’ ‘flawless’ and ‘foreboding.’  It’s a polarizing album; fans are often either turned off by it’s rawness or devoted to it with cult-like reverence.

Dolan has described “The Failure” as the “raw brain download,” made without any consideration of commercial success, audience, or ‘accessibility.’  ”This is the album I needed to make if I died when it was over and only got to make one… this contains my DNA.”  It is meant to be listened to in one sitting, front to back, as a complete concept and progression.

Stand-out tracks have stood the test of time on their own however, including “Heart Failure,” which features Sage Francis and marked Dolan’s first collaboration with Alias.  Tracks like “Joan of Arcadia,” “The Skycycle Blues,” and “Kate” have also made lifelong fans of many, and established Dolan as a voice to be reckoned with.

2009 – HOUSE OF BEES VOL. 1

Digital | Physical

To prepare fans for “Fallen House, Sunken City,” and the transition from the earlier record’s spoken word delivery, “House of Bees vol. I” was created by Buddy Peace and B. Dolan.   The scathing, firebrand delivery promised on “Heart Failure” was fleshed out further here, on tracks like ”R.S.V.P. (Lucifer)” and “One Breath Left”.  Also included were a number of impressive collaborations with SFR counterparts like Curtis Plum, Sleep, Prolyphic, Alias and Sage Francis.

This album also contains the wildly popular tracks “Open Letter to Justin Timberlake,” and ”Vin Diesel,” both of which feature Dolan taking advantage of the mixtape format to exhibit his deeply unsettling sense of humor.

It’s doubtful whether any DJ could be more perfectly paired with B. Dolan; Buddy Peace’s stream-of-conscious, cut and paste collage style fits Dolan’s shifts in mood and tone like a glove.

2010 – “FALLEN HOUSE, SUNKEN CITY” LP

Critically acclaimed and criminally slept on, “Fallen House, Sunken City” nonetheless succeeded in adding an underground classic to B. Dolan’s catalogue, and bringing him fully to the attention of the indie rap community.  With co-signs and praise from underground legends like Sage Francis, El-P and Brother Ali, it was impossible to ignore songs like “Marvin,” “Earthmovers” and “Leaving New York.”  Backed for an entire album by Alias’ frenetic boom bap production, B. Dolan tore his heart and tongue to pieces through a blistering 12 track journey.

Chances are high that you became aware of B. Dolan because of a song on this album. It contains “The Hunter,” “Kitchen Sink,” “Economy of Words (Bail it Out)” “Border Crossing,” “Body of Work,” and “50 Ways to Bleed Your Customer”  Need we say more?  B. Dolan fans know what this is;  the most recent evolution–and strongest expression–of a brutal and restless MC.
